Career Opportunity
We are seeking candidates for the Safety Specialist position at Wallops Island, VA. Surface Combat Systems Center (SCSC) Wallops Island requires support for management, engineering, operation, and technical expertise for activation, operations, maintenance, and engineering of equipment, systems, and computer programs in support of all Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and Program Executive Office, Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS) missions and projects performed at SCSC. SCSC provides live and simulated integrated warfare capabilities in a net-centric maritime environment to develop, test, evaluate, and conduct fleet operations and training for the warfighter.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide industrial safety subject matter expertise for facility operations.
- Keep apprised of OSHA, NAVOSH, and local safety policies.
- Conduct inspections and audits to monitor OSHA, NAVOSH, and local safety policy compliance.
- Ensure safety considerations are included in all project plans.
- Identify, document, track, and coordinate remedies for safety issues.
- Report and thoroughly document safety incidents.
- Provide tailored safety briefs to address site-specific safety concerns and in preparation for the execution of hazardous operations.
- Observe hazardous operations to ensure safe execution.
- Assist with the development of emergency response plans and coordinate exercises for emergency response.
Travel
- This position includes a low level of travel.
Education, Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Abilities Required
- Ten years experience in a plant or faciity as a safety professional.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and NAVOSH policies.
- Experience with hazardous materials related to chemicals, fuels, fire, confined spaces, working aloft, electrical work, and electromagnetic radiation.
- Ability to create and conduct professional oral briefs to groups.
- Ability to plan, execute, and report status of facilities related to heavy weather preparations, fire evacuations, and emergency situations.
- Good written communication skills.
- Ability to work varied shifts.
- Must maintain the capability to communicate with their supervisor and/or manager when not in the office.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- One of the following certifications is required:
- OSHA 500 certificate or equivalent
- OSHA 501 certificate or equivalent
- National Safety Council Advanced Safety Certificate
- ASP- Associate Safety Professional
- CSP- Certified Safety Professional
- GSP- Graduate Safety Professional
- Navy Crane Certifying Official desired.
Qualifications
- Active DoD Secret security clearance highly desired, however candidates who are eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance will be considered. If the selected candidate does not hold an active clearance, he/she will receive a contingent offer. A start date will be established once an interim Secret clearance is granted.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must have reliable transportation to and from various work locations on base.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to frequently traverse stairs.
- Sitting for long periods of time, standing, walking, crouching, and kneeling.
- Reaching, handling, using equipment, keyboards, and mobile devices.
- Ability to lift items weighing up to 20 lbs.
- Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding.
- Ability to maneuver in tight spaces.
