Graham Windham’s Beacon Harlem Program is a resource full of opportunity for community members from kindergarten through adulthood. The Harlem Beacon offers a safe, joyful, academically enriching and stimulating environment for elementary and middle school children. High school students have the opportunity for enrichment, career exploration and athletics with adults experiencing community engagement, athletics, life coaching and parent groups. The Beacon partners with our host school, Mahalia Jackson PS/MS 123 and Graham’s Community School located at PS/MS 123 to assist in the in an extended academic day, to develop specific strategies to address student and family issues including absenteeism, behavior and health and wellness. In addition, the Beacon connects with community resources and the strength in community to expand offerings. During the summer, the program provides free Summer Rising camp for elementary through middle school students.
- Provide creative arts therapy. Encourage an environment that fosters and enhances creativity, socialization, and promotes physical and mental health.
- Conduct goal-oriented structured therapeutic sessions that utilize creative arts techniques and principles for an assigned caseload in music, art, and/or dance.
- Recognize, address and utilize therapeutic creative arts interventions to facilitate mastery, coping skills, and creative expression for children and youth who have experienced trauma.
- Assist in operating, maintaining and purchasing equipment and other materials/resources necessary for creative art therapy sessions, i.e., presentation equipment, supplies, etc.
- Provide engagement and rapport with the purpose of fostering an individual’s commitment to engage in a therapeutic relationship and attend therapy regularly. Explore motivation, resistance to therapy and attendance as needed.
- Maintain electronic records and documentation according to the standards and timeframes established by Graham policies and procedures.
- Maintain expected levels of productivity and provide quality care.
- Manage up reportable incidents as well as complete necessary documentation.
- Be actively self-reflective & self-aware of how clinical and administrative practice affects clients, families, and the communities we serve. Be open and willing to receive constructive feedback.
- Approach work with an anti-racism lens and be open to continuously learning and professional growth.
Position Qualifications:
- NYS LCAT Licensed Creative Arts Therapist Required
- Master’s degree in creative arts therapy Required
- Level of expertise in a specific creative art, such as art, music, and/or dance.
- Able to work evenings and/or Saturdays.
- Experience working with elementary and middle school students a plus
Salary & Compensation:
- Base Salary or Hourly Rate: $46.50/hour
- FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
