School Bus Drivers and Substitutes - Caroline County Public Schools

JOB SUMMARY:

Transport students safely to and from school and assist students while entering and exiting the bus

Responsible for following an assigned route and schedule in the safe and efficient operation of a school bus while adhering to traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and the precautions necessary to avoid accidents

For Full-Time School Bus Drivers ---

QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS

: 1

Holds Commercial Driver's License with Maryland endorsement for passenger vehicles 2

Has five (5) years driving experience 3

Complete the pre-service instruction as required pursuant to regulation .07A of COMAR 13A.06.07 and complete future in-service instruction as required in regulation .07B 4

Has acceptable driving record 5

Meets health and physical requirements as specified by the Board 6

Ability to carry out written and/or oral instructions 7

Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers, parents and students 8

Be at least 21 years of age 9

Received a negative controlled substances test result

For Substitute School Bus Drivers ---

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED

2

Three (3) years of successful automobile driving experience with a good driving record

Previous school bus driving experience, preferred

4

Knowledge of the local street and road system of Caroline County, preferred 5

Possession of or ability to obtain a Maryland Class B Commercial Drivers License (air brake, passenger and school bus endorsements), or equivalent within the period of time specified by the pre-service training program

Ability to meet all pre-service training and pre-employment testing

7

Must be capable of lifting a minimum of 50 lbs

8

Must be able to sit for an extended period of time in the bus drivers seat, reach the steering wheel and pedals and wear the seat belt properly every day

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Drive children to and from the various schools on assigned routes in accordance with an established time schedule in a safe, proper, and courteous manner 2

Adhere to CCPS policies and procedures in maintaining appropriate student behavior and discipline

3

Interact positively with, gain respect of, and maintain discipline over student passengers to ensure that behavior is controlled and not distractive to safe driving 4

Administer first aid as required, and contact appropriate administrators in case of serious injury or illness

5

Transport, supervise, and assist children with special learning needs and physical handicaps

6

Complete pre- and post-trip bus inspections and sweep, clean and refuel bus daily

7

Maintain a clean bus in good mechanical condition and report any mechanical defects or malfunctions

8

Complete records and reports relating to bus operations in a timely manner; compile and submit accident report information and report prolonged traffic delays

9

Plan, organize and implement vehicle evacuation drills

10

Respond to public contacts concerning transportation problems and concerns in a polite and courteous manner

11

Attend all in-service and safety training meetings as required

12

Have excellent attendance and punctuality

13

Maintain a professional appearance

14

Perform other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation.
