Position Overview
A Distinctive Schools Nurse holds as their top priority the health, safety and medical well-being of the students and staff at the school. A Nurse will provide direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness and emergency care to students and staff in response to the nursing assessment and in accordance with professional standards, school policies and procedures, and state and local mandates.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct healthcare services, such as first aid, illness treatment, and emergency care to students
- Prepare health assessment on students
- Identify health problems, make referrals for diagnosis and treatment, develop educational modifications, provide follow-up and evaluation, and maintain appropriate documentation
- Provides counseling and follow-up services to students with disabilities as delineated in the IEP/504
- Follow up on homebound students needing related health care services
- Provide intervention in times of school crisis, i.e. death, suicide, traumatic events
- Initiate, encourage, and participate in health education programs for children
- Provide health counseling to parents of students with health conditions, and provide individual and group health counseling to students with health conditions
- Develop the medication protocol to safely store, administer, document, and monitor the effectiveness of the medication given at school
- Coordinate activities of local schools concerned with communicable disease regulations
- Assist with the State and Federal mandated screenings and provides follow-up for deficits in vision, hearing, growth and development, and other physical impairment
- Maintain accurate records (Maintain an inventory of materials, assessments, and supplies)
- Update daily progress notes
- Update weekly documentation of all services delivered
Requirements (minimum)
Education: Associate's Degree in Nursing
Qualifications:
- CPR certified
- Valid Illinois nursing license (Certification as a school nurse OR begins certification process once hired)
Physical demands: Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 50% walking, and 40% standing.
