SCIENTIST 2 - SAMPLE RECEIVING SCIENTIST - South Florida Water Management District

About the Job
This is an entry level Laboratory Scientist position responsible for receiving and logging samples delivered to the laboratory.
Work may also include responsibilities for preparation and analysis of water, sediment and biota samples for the determination of a variety of inorganic parameters using manual and automated laboratory instrumentation in an environmental laboratory certified under the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP).
Laboratory analysis is typically conducted in close cooperation with a staff chemist or supervisor. Preparation techniques involve the use of basic laboratory equipment such as balances, pipettors, ovens and sterilizers.
Analytical procedures may include the use of automated flow injection analyzer, ion chromatograph, carbon analyzer, titrator or spectrophotometer. Performs and records routine maintenance on these instruments. The candidate should be familiar with the quality control requirements of a certified environmental laboratory and with the production aspects of automated laboratory instruments.
This position may also be filled at the lower level of Scientist 1.
Employment Guidelines:
Scientist 2: Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a closely related field; and 1 + years of environmental laboratory experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within scientific discipline that can be applied to support the District's strategic goals and objectives. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Scientist 1: Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a closely related field; and 1 year of environmental laboratory experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within scientific discipline that can be applied to support the District's strategic goals and objectives. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Licenses / Certifications:
Valid State of Florida Driver's License is required.
Physical Requirements / Working Environment:
Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
Work may require some lifting (up to 40 pounds), prolonged standing, repetitive bending and reaching, periodic exposure to refrigerated conditions to retrieve samples, and work is performed in a laboratory where employees routinely use numerous chemical compounds.
