Seasonal Maintenance Worker - Water Distribution - City of Port Townsend

Four Seasonal Maintenance Workers needed to work fulltime in the Water Distribution division of the City of Port Townsend Public Works Department for seasonal terms of six (6) months. There is a possibility of a six-month extension.

Applicants interested in a career in drinking water will gain hands-on experience required for the Washington State Waterworks Operator Certification process.

$18-20/hour, 40 hours per week, eligible for overtime

No medical benefits, but accrues 1 hour of sick time per 40 hours worked & able to access City's Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Working hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision performs a variety of maintenance and repair work to the water distribution systems with emphasis on water meter replacement, exploratory field investigation and identification of pipe material used in water service connections. The City of Port Townsend strives to provide a quality reliable infrastructure looking toward a sustainable future.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Replaces water meters throughout the City's water distribution system
• Performs exploratory field investigations using hand tools to dig and expose plumbing near water meter connections and identify pipe and fitting material used
• Accurately records field investigation findings on both electronic and handwritten formats.
• Participates as a member of the Public Works team to maintain the City's water distribution system including pumps, pipes, hydrant, meters, reservoirs, and valves
• Assists with maintenance and repairs at the Water Treatment Facility
• Assists with maintenance and repairs of the Olympic Gravity Water System
• Performs grounds maintenance at Water Department facilities
• Provides support of other divisions and departments during emergencies
• Other duties as assigned
• Provides essential services as a front-line worker

• Ability to use hand tools to dig holes for infrastructure investigation

• Ability to adhere to WISHA and DOSH health and safety requirements in the workplace
• Supports cross-team functionality and collaboration with other divisions and departments
• Supports the division with laborer work
• Ability to safely operate City vehicles
• Ability to perform meter reading and use reading equipment
• Ability to assist in performing leak detection and repair
• Ability to perform grounds maintenance of facilities
• Ability to use City GIS maps to locate water and collect data for asset management
• Ability to operate GPS equipment for asset inventories and mapping

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.
• Must be at least 18 years old at the time of hire.
• Must be able to perform physical work outdoors under all weather conditions.
• Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public and co-workers.
• Must pass criminal background check.
• Valid Washington State Driver's license and ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.

Preferred

• Water Distribution Manager 1 certification
• Current flaggers card
• Current First Aid/CPR certification
• 2+ years' experience working in waterworks, plumbing, construction or related field

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires being onsite working in the field primarily in the outdoors during all types of weather; repeated walking, bending, stooping and lifting; the ability to occasionally lift up to 60 lbs.; vision and hearing at level required to perform essential functions (may be corrected); and a full range of motor skills. This position may require working in confined spaces and require climbing and working at heights up to 100 feet.
