About the Job
Advanced Materials and Microsystems Group is a multidisciplinary group that works at the convergence of materials science and micro- and nanoscale engineering to develop microsystems with novel functionality. We develop materials, microfabrication processes, and multifunctional microsystems, with the aim to leverage properties at the small scale in everything we do. Our activities range from forming metamaterials and phase-change materials, to integrating optoelectronic devices in unusual form factors such as fibers and fabrics, to developing microfluidic devices based on electrowetting, to creating new materials and new processes for 3D printing. Our application space is equally broad: it encompasses low-cost picosatellites fabricated in a silicon foundry, advanced fibers that can sense and communicate and be woven into clothing, energy-efficient microhydraulic actuators for micro-robotics, optofluidics for enhanced eyewear, and energy storage and energy harvesting components. Our high-impact work is enabled by the Microelectronics Laboratory, the Defense Fabric Discovery Center, and other cleanroom facilities at the Laboratory.
Job Description
The group is seeking a Semiconductor Device Physicist to help develop specialized silicon CMOS, beyond-CMOS technologies and related-computational devices. This individual will be expected to (1) lead and grow research programs in support of new semiconductor device concepts and architectures for a wide range of applications, including but not limited to CMOS, (2) execute TCAD simulations in support of key technologies special interest and associated SPICE models, and (3) will work with a team of process engineers to establish future generations of MIT Lincoln Laboratory special-purpose device technologies. In addition to technical skills, the group seeks a well-rounded candidate that has exceptional communication and presentation skills, can work independently but also in a multidisciplinary team, and can be impactful across a wide range of technical challenges in a diverse environment.
Responsibilities will include:
- Developing new and novel semiconductor device concepts
- Semiconductor device modeling (e.g. transport, electrostatics, TCAD, SPICE)
- Creating test structures for semiconductor device design and optimization and recommending specifying test conditions and procedures
- Interpreting simulation results to inform device design and process development
- Collaborating with internal and external team members of diverse backgrounds to set objectives, review data and experimental progress, and coordinate large-scale integration strategies.
- Managing programs
- Writing reports, papers, and/or patents as appropriate
- Making presentations to diverse audiences
Requirements
Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics or expertise within semiconductor field or related experience, with 5 years of hands-on experience in semiconductor device and/or process development and integration and track record of innovation.
- Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or related field. Equivalent experience will be considered.
- Thorough understanding of semiconductor device physics
- Thorough understanding of TCAD simulation, SPICE modeling, finite element modelling (COMSOL, Synopsys, SILVACO, etc.)
- Competency in emerging semiconductor device technologies (for example, CMOS nodes at or below 65 nm, including nanometer-scale technologies)
- Ability to interpret and present physical/electrical data (Excel, JMP, Powerpoint)
- Experience with design of experiments, device testing, data and analysis acquisition, and/or programming (MATLAB, Python, LabView)
- Experience with project management
Preferred / Desired
- Experience with Design Technology Co-Optimization (DTCO)
- Experience in a production-class or commercial semiconductor microfabrication facility, including the creation of simulations, layouts, process design kits (PDK) for semiconductor technologies based on silicon-based, group III/V and II/ IV materials, and emerging materials and devices.
- Understanding of statistical data analysis or principles of manufacturing
- Understanding of electrical test equipment test automation
- Digital CMOS and analog circuit analysis
- Understanding or interest in new emerging compute architectures (e.g. analog quantum-inspired circuits and algorithms based on classical computing hardware, neuromorphic computing)
