About the Job
Purpose:
The Senior Accountant is responsible for various accounting activities, including preparing journal entries, managing reconciliations, supporting the month-end close process, and audit preparation. This role ensures the accuracy and integrity of balance sheet accounts, resolves accounting discrepancies, and ensures compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The Senior Accountant also contributes to special projects within the department and the broader organization.
Key Responsibilities:

Reconciliation & Analysis (35%)
Develops and maintains monthly reconciliations and analyses of general ledger data. Reviews reported activity against source and supporting documentation, resolves outstanding issues through research and analysis, and implements corrective controls. Applies analytical accounting tools for compiling, integrating, and analyzing data, including trending analyses. Communicates the status of reconciliations and projects to management in a timely manner. -
Journal Entries & Documentation (30%)
Prepares monthly journal entries, ensuring they are supported by appropriate documentation (transactional or analytical). Ensures timely and accurate recording of financial activity and thorough understanding of the underlying transactions. -
Special Projects & Advanced Analysis (20%)
Engages in special projects, including applying accounting and research techniques to resolve material issues and implement new processes. Performs advanced analyses and trending to verify financial data integrity. Interprets contractual arrangements and designs appropriate accounting flows. Provides answers to accounting procedure questions through research and interpretation of policy and regulations. -
Professional Development & Cross-Training (10%)
Enhances job knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing technical publications, networking with peers, and staying up-to-date with industry practices. Strengthens the department’s effectiveness by cross-training, documenting procedures, and assisting with audit responses. -
Support & Mentorship (5%)
Assists and mentors less experienced staff by providing guidance on accounting activities and responding to queries. Ensures departmental continuity and knowledge sharing through cross-training and procedural documentation.
Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. -
Experience:
At least 5 years of accounting experience, including the development and maintenance of financial reconciliations and related schedules. -
In Lieu of Education:
In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, an additional 4 years of relevant work experience is required, in addition to the required 5 years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Licenses/Certifications:
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
- Strong ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
- Advanced ability to analyze and solve complex problems in accounting.
- Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles).
- Proficiency in analyzing, consolidating, and interpreting financial data.
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Proven ability to multi-task and manage shifting priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
Additional Requirements:
The incumbent must immediately disclose any events such as debarment or exclusion that would make them ineligible to work directly or indirectly on Federal health care programs. This role requires adaptability to changing priorities and deadlines, while maintaining excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders, including those who may present challenges.
Additional Skills:
Experience with month-end close, journal entries, variance analysis (actual vs. budget), and balance sheet and profit & loss statements is preferred.
