We are seeking a Senior Control Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and support of process control systems across our refined products and petrochemical pipeline operations. This position offers a dynamic environment to leverage your expertise in PLC systems, HMI development, and automation technologies to improve the efficiency and safety of energy transportation.
Job Description:
As a Senior Control Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the design, configuration, and support of process control systems in refined product and petrochemical pipelines. You will work closely with local operations teams, providing engineering support, technical expertise, and leadership on projects involving control systems and instrumentation.
This role offers the opportunity to be a key technical leader in designing and supporting automation and process control systems, ensuring operational reliability, safety, and compliance with industry standards. You’ll manage the design, implementation, and maintenance of control systems that support the safe transportation and storage of energy resources.
Key Responsibilities:
- Process Control System Design & Support: Provide technical support and engineering leadership for the design, implementation, and maintenance of process control systems and instrumentation.
- PLC and HMI Configuration: Lead the configuration of PLC systems (such as Allen Bradley Control Logix) and HMI applications (including Wonderware Intouch) to ensure system functionality and safety.
- Project Scope & Estimation: Provide guidance and support for process control project scope, estimates, and overall requirements for control system designs, upgrades, and optimizations.
- System Optimization & Troubleshooting: Evaluate existing process control systems and instrumentation to optimize performance and ensure compliance with safety regulations and loop tuning standards.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure systems meet regulatory standards, including compliance with API, NFPA, ANSI, and other relevant safety standards for midstream energy operations.
- Collaboration with Operations: Collaborate closely with local operations teams and contractors to ensure successful system integration, testing, and commissioning for new projects and upgrades.
- Technical Leadership: Serve as a technical leader on control system projects, providing mentorship and guidance to junior engineers and ensuring control systems meet operational needs.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain and update all required documentation, including loop diagrams, control narratives, and safety system designs to ensure compliance with company and industry standards.
- On-Call Support: Be available for on-call support to troubleshoot and resolve critical control system issues, ensuring system reliability and uptime.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Education: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Control Systems, or a related field).
- Experience:
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in the design, implementation, and support of process control systems in storage and pipeline operations (including crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas).
- Candidates with at least 3 years of relevant experience will also be considered.
- PLC & HMI Expertise: Extensive experience with PLC configuration (specifically Allen Bradley Control Logix) and HMI development (including Wonderware Intouch) is required.
- Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of loop tuning, safety systems, ISA documentation standards, and process control system design.
- Process Control Experience: Strong understanding of process control systems, automation, and instrumentation in pipeline and storage operations.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with operations teams, contractors, and technical experts at all levels.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in various industrial environments.
- Travel & On-Call Availability: Willingness to travel up to 10% domestically and provide 24/7 on-call support as needed.
