The Senior Counsel prepares, reviews, and negotiates legal documents and contracts while explaining legal concepts with their implications to human resources, financial services, consumer protection, and general business matters affecting Suncoast Credit Union. This individual conducts meticulous contract reviews for vendor agreements to protect the credit union’s best interests, follow applicable laws, and support strategic goals. Key responsibilities include offering expert legal counsel on litigation, product development, operational processes, and regulatory compliance to enhance the institution members’ security. An ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment with the ability to manage a large workload under self-direction.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the credit union’s written policies, procedures, and other regulations
- Provide advice and counsel on legal matters or problems involving the credit union
- Act as in-house legal advisor for the organization, guide on regulatory compliance issues, including vendor management, enterprise risk management, and consumer protection
- Manage and supervise court-ordered garnishments, levies, subpoenas, and other related matters affecting member accounts
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and other legal documents
- Organize and provide training to staff, management, and officials for ongoing legal developments and issues facing the credit union

- Provide legal advice concerning matters such as the establishment, interpretation, and revision of credit union policies, organizational compliance with applicable laws and regulations, contractual agreements, and fiscal issues
- Assist and provide counsel to credit union personnel for a broad array of consumer retail, business loan, and account products or services regarding legal matters including, but not limited to, Uniform Commercial Code, Trusts, Guardianship, and conservatorship documents, powers of attorney documents, garnishments, levies, and bankruptcies.
- Conduct internal investigations, support regulatory inquiries to assist in the assessment of legal complaints or threatened litigation
- Assist General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel with managing litigation and external counsel with consideration to budgeting, strategic planning, outside counsel fees, and expense management
- Research, analyze, distill, and interpret complex laws, rules, and regulations in a clear and concise communicative manner to the Legal Department colleagues, senior management, and internal clients
- Maintain knowledge and expertise of EFTA, TILA, FCRA, and UDAAP, regulatory requirements, policies pertaining to contracts, collections, consumer protection, and employment laws
- Advise legal policy matters relative to supervision, regulation, and systemic risk
- Anticipate, monitor, and address legal, regulatory, and industry trends to advise on commercially reasonable solutions to ensure the execution of business objectives proceeds in a practical and risk-based manner within established risk tolerances
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college as well as a Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school
- 5+ years of legal experience, preferably in the financial sector
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents
- Ability to effectively address sensitive inquiries or complaints
- Ability to make effective and legally sound pronouncements on complex topics
- Advanced skill level in Microsoft Office Suite and above average in technical literacy preferred
- The individual must be licensed and a member in good standing with the Florida Bar
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to prioritize tasks by effectively managing competing and changing priorities to meet deadlines
- Accurate, detail-oriented, and organized with task management
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to interact with members, staff, vendors, and government regulators
