Position Summary:

The Senior Data Engineer plays a pivotal role in shaping the data infrastructure that drives Empower's innovation and growth. The Senior Data Engineer is integral in creating and optimizing Extract, Load, Transform (ELT) workflows and pipelines that support efficient data integration and accessibility, ensuring that business decisions are informed by high-quality, reliable data.

In this role, the Senior Data Engineer will spearhead the design and implementation of modern data architectures, including star schemas and data marts, to facilitate organized and actionable data analysis. By leveraging Representational State Transfer (REST) Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for seamless data integration, the engineer will contribute to a comprehensive data ecosystem that supports Empower's business growth. Additionally, the Senior Data Engineer will drive data strategy initiatives, applying their analytical expertise to enhance data visualization and insights, while ensuring compliance with data privacy laws and regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develops and deploys cloud-based data infrastructure solutions.
• Creates, manages, and optimizes ELT workflows and pipelines.
• Designs and implements ELT workflows using both visual ELT tools and manual coding, ensuring reliability and efficiency in data integration.
• Works on modern data architecture development.
• Spearheads the deployments of cloud-based data solutions to ensure scalability, reliability, quality, and security.
• Designs modern data architectures, including star schema and data marts to facilitate accessible, organized, and actionable data storage and analysis.
• Leverages REST APIs for seamless data integration, enhancing our comprehensive data ecosystem.
• Drives data strategy initiatives and contributes to the visualization and insights projects, applying analytical expertise to foster business growth.
• Ensures the highest standards of data quality, security, and compliance across all projects and platforms.
• Develops star schema, data marts, and other data modeling techniques for optimized data storage, access, and analysis.
• Utilizes REST APIs for data integration.
• Leverages REST APIs to integrate external data sources, ensuring a comprehensive and seamless data ecosystem.
• Contributes to data strategy and visualization projects.

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to remain in a stationary position for a significant amount of the workday and frequently use their hands and fingers to handle or feel in order to access, input, and retrieve information from the computer and other office productivity devices. The employee is regularly required to move about the office and around the corporate campus. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. This position is remote, except for occasional events like orientation, team meetups, special training or planning sessions, etc.

Knowledge and Skills:

• Expertise in Amazon Web Services (AWS) Serverless technologies (Lambda, Step Functions, Simple Queue Service Queues, DynamoDB) to create scalable, efficient data processing solutions.
• Adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
• Demonstrated flexibility and the ability to rapidly translate business requirements into technical solutions, thriving under pressure.
• Deep expertise in building data models and creating complex queries using Sales Qualified Leads (SQLs).
• Strong project management and organizational skills.
• The ideal candidate will have a solid knowledge of many of the following areas:
  • Relational SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, DynamoDB, MongoDB, etc.).
  • Deep experience with ETL tools like (Apache Hop, Pentaho, Informatica, AWS Glue, SQL Server Integration Services etc.) and a solid grasp of designing, deploying, and maintaining workflows and data pipelines.
  • AWS Core Concepts (Roles, Security Groups, AWS Lambda (Python), Step Functions, Batch, Kinesis etc.).
  • Data ingestion (e.g., FiveTran or similar).
  • Data warehousing and storage (e.g., Snowflake, RedShift, Vertica or similar).
  • Data transformation (e.g., Data Build Tool or similar).
  • Visual reporting and analysis (e.g., Power Business Intelligence or similar).
  • Python programming experience.
• Commits to open-source projects are a bonus, especially in the data analytics space.

Experience and Qualifications:

• Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems, or another quantitative field or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in a Data Engineering role.
• Minimum of 8 years of dimensional and relational data modeling experience.
• Strong Python software development skills for API usage, web scraping, data wrangling, testing, and data automation.
• Experience with database and data warehouse concepts such as facts and dimensions to design and develop data models that support enterprise reporting and analytic needs.
• Experience with wrangling, exploring, and analyzing data to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Familiar with data wrangling, optimization of data flows, continuous learning, and adoption of emerging technologies.
• Consulting experience preferred.
• AWS Data Engineering Certification preferred.
• AWS Data Analytics Certification preferred. 
• Data Vault 2 Data Modeling experience or CDVP2.x Certification preferred.
• Snowflake experience or SnowPro Certification preferred.
• Kimball or Inmon Data Modeling experience preferred.
