About the Job
We are seeking a full-time Senior Data Scientist in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for applying your statistics and technical skills to help various parts of Garmin’s business make better business decisions, products and user experiences.
Responsibilities:Essential Functions
- Regularly teach leaders about how data might be better leveraged as well as advise decision makers on strategically important issues
- Serve as subject matter expert in topics like analysis best practices, successful data project management and effectively presenting information
- Identify opportunities to leverage internal company and external datasets to drive business solutions
- Mine and analyze data to drive optimization/improvement of product development, marketing techniques or operations strategies
- Assess the effectiveness/accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques
- Drive improvement of data quality of existing datasets and advocate for the collection of new data likely to further improve actionable insights
- Proactively search for/act on ideas to improve team quality, efficiency and overall ability, demonstrate commitment to the success of the entire data team, adapt teaching methods to the needs of teammates, and excels at collaborating with a team of researchers
- Participate in project definition activities and set business expectations with what is possible given data that currently exists
- Develop custom data models/algorithms to apply to datasets and use predictive modeling to increase/optimize user experiences, revenue generation, and other business initiatives
- Coordinate with different functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes
- Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy
- Possess a drive to learn and master new technologies and techniques
- Visualize/present data for stakeholders using intriguing/interesting graphics/technologies
- Provide technical direction, mentoring, training and guidance to other individual contributors in the group
- Able to identify/create the appropriate research design for a given research question
- Convey complex technical/statistical concepts in an easy to understand way and translate business problems/questions into appropriate research questions, data gathering and statistical analysis methods
- Provide clear, actionable steps to be taken based from data analysis and can articulate the caveats/weaknesses of a given dataset
- Not only use quantitative skills to answer questions directly posed by business, but also proactively seek out questions whose answers would also benefit the business
- Constantly identify/present opportunities to capture new data or leverage existing data in new ways to improve business insights
- Adept at evaluating business questions and differentiating between what is interesting versus valuable
- Adept at condensing large-scale analysis efforts into succinct, easy-to-understand visualizations that are actionable
- Able to conduct peer reviews in an open, honest and respectful manner
- Intellectually curious and constantly digging into data to gain a better understanding and yearns to continually learn new tools, skills and concepts
- Provide quarterly classes for team members to learn Data Science techniques and technologies
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Applied Statistics, or related degree with a Data Science or Applied Statistics Emphasis AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience (emphasis may be in Machine Learning, Mathematics or Statistics if relevant experience is accompanied) OR Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Applied Statistics, or related degree with Data Science or Applied Statistics Emphasis AND a minimum of 3 years relevant experience (emphasis may be in Machine Learning, Mathematics or Statistics if relevant experience is accompanied)
- Experience implementing Large Language Models (LLM's), including Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architectures, various prompting methods, and LLM evaluators to monitor for quality and safety
- Experience using systems such as Python, Java, Map Reduce, SQL, Scala, Machine Learning and comparative statistical methods
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with structured database management systems
- Experience with Hadoop ecosystem and components (Spark, Hive, HBase, HDFS, Storm, Kafka)
- Experience working with multiple operating systems environments, associated networks, and infrastructure configurations
- Demonstrated understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics
- Demonstrated success in working with large volumes of structured data
