Senior Director of Unix Linux Engineering Operations
The Sr. Director of UNIX/Linux Engineering & Operations responsible for managing a team to provide maintenance, security, disaster recovery, and operational support for all the UNIX/Linux environments. Additionally, the IT UNIX team acts as technical resources for the other IT/User teams on UNIX/Linux issues from an infrastructure, operating system, and/or application standpoint. The Sr. Director of UNIX/Linux Engineering & operations will head a team of UNIX/Linux engineers responsible for the implementation of new Linux technologies, and working with other teams that require a UNIX/Linux backend. The Sr. Director of UNIX/Linux Engineering & Operations will report directly to the Vice President of IT Operations.
Description
General Responsibilities:
•Manage a team of dedicated UNIX/Linux Administrators and Engineers
•Provide Project Management/Planning for all UNIX/Linux related projects in association with Engineering Department
•Interface with the IT Operations group, VMware group, IT applications, Network Operations, our software development, and our Security group
•Full responsibility for the Company’s UNIX/Linux infrastructure
•Full responsibility for day-to-day issues on our UNIX/Linux platforms
•Maintain service level standards
•Keep all devices up to date with Security and operations patching
•Provide leadership in streamlining day-to-day operations including improvements and streamlining monitoring and alerting for all UNIX/Linus systems
•Responsible for engineering and maintaining project timelines while deploying systems with industry accepted standards that meet the customers’ requirements
•Responsible for overseeing design of new service requests running on Unix/Linux and identifying all security, redundancy, and monitoring needs of the service.
•Build and maintain an IT service library of all Unix/Linux platforms.
•Providing and maintaining data flow diagrams for all systems coming through engineering
•Providing handoff documentation and training the operations team on all newly deployed systems
•Reviewing outages with the Linux Team and implement proactive outage prevention / alerting.
•Provide leadership in implementing new technologies
•Provide team members with opportunities and growth
•Produce weekly status reports for management
•Manage and maintain 24/7 servers and services which provide critical internet infrastructure in the US.
Requirements:
•Bachelor’s Degree in a job-related discipline (or equivalent work experience)
•4+ years of management experience in an enterprise UNIX/Linux environment
•Must have strong organizational/project management skills
•Must have strong inter-personal and communication skills
•Must be able to motivate and lead
•Must be able to perform independent problem solving
•Must be able to mentor Unix/Linux admins in Scripting & server/service troubleshooting
•A strong understanding of and 6+ years of experience with UNIX/Linux related environments (RedHat Linux, Ubuntu, Centos, Storage, hardware, etc).
•Familiarity with Change Control and migration of Applications
•Fundamental understanding of security and highly availability systems
•Fundamental understanding of network protocol, packets, ports and subnets as related to Unix/Linux environment.
•Be a full part of management for Data Centers
•Must be able to understand Audit reporting and produce management reports
Preferred Experience/Skills
Cisco UCS experience is a large plus
Zimbra, DHCP, LDAP, Nginx, and BIND/DNS experience a large plus
Oracle/MySQL experience a plus
VMware and NAS/SAN technologies
Cloud Technologies and VMware alternative, RHEL, KVM
Any relevant industry standard certifications
Basic networking knowledge of DMZ’s, firewalls and the network protocols; Anycast, Broadcast, Kafka, Unicast and multicast.
Scripting - BaSH, Perl, Python, Korn
Work Conditions
Additional working hours as required, to include during the maintenance window 12:00 AM – 6:00 AM CST.
Sitting for extended periods of time.
Some travel may be required.
