About the Job
Thorlabs, Inc. is seeking a full-time, Senior Electrical Engineer to join our growing Laser Division team located in the Baltimore/Washington DC area. The ideal candidate has a strong electronics background and can manage multiple projects independently. Relocation assistance within the US will be provided. Hybrid schedule with 2 to 3 days in the office per week will be considered.
Purpose of the Position
This position involves designing complex analog, mixed-signal, and digital circuits for Laser Division products interfacing with optics. Key responsibilities include system-level design, schematic capture, board layout, prototype testing, and transitioning designs to manufacturing. The position also includes sustaining engineering for released products.
Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:
· Work closely with Electrical, Mechanical, and Optics Engineers to define requirements and conduct design reviews
· Drive electronic projects from design concepts (block-diagram) to production
· Manage the entire schematic and PCB design process, including hierarchical design, component selection, PCB stack-up, routing, and generating fabrication and assembly packages, while supporting PCB testing.
· PCB testing using a range of lab instruments such as signal generators, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, etc.
· Release to manufacturing, including assembly, test and bill-of-materials documentation
· Train and mentor junior engineer team members

Requirements
Qualifications
Experience:
Required:
· 7+ years of professional experience in PCB component-level design, including layout
· Proven expertise in design and development of discrete electronic circuits, multi-assembly system/unit design board layout
· Strong analog background in circuit design, including experience with amplifiers, filters, power management circuits, ADCs/DACs, and mixed-signal design
· Experience in developing and managing component libraries.
· Experience with controlled impedance, length/delay matching, differential signal routing, and digital busses (USB, PCIe, etc.)
· Proficiency in simulation tools such as SPICE
· Develop around MCUs and ARM microcontrollers
Desired:
· Experience in power electronics AC, DC power management, switching & linear supplies
· Expertise in Altium Designer
· Familiarity with digital logic designs & FPGAs
· Familiarity with US & EU EMC and safety product standards, including CISPR, IEC, FCC, and UL regulations
· Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python
Education:
BS Degree, or higher, in Electrical Engineering or equivalent field.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
· Expertise in PCB design using CAD software such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD.
· Proficiency in simulation software like LTSpice, TINA, or Webench for circuit analysis and validation.
· Knowledge of EMI/EMC compliance testing and mitigation strategies.
· Proficiency in version control
· Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
· Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
· Good planning, prioritizing and organization and multiple priority management skills.
The salary for this position will range from 90K -200K depending on experience
