Position Summary
Terrasmart, Gibraltar's fast growing renewables business, is seeking a Senior Embedded Systems Engineer to enhance our team and contribute to our solar tracking product initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in embedded systems development, with experience in firmware development, microcontroller programming, and system integration. Your role will also encompass system design, testing, and providing technical support to the field during the installation processes. You will mentor junior engineers and stay updated with the latest advancements in electronics and solar technology. This position offers a path for rapid advancement to an embedded systems management role, providing a significant opportunity to influence the direction of our solar technology initiatives.
Primary Responsibilities (Essential Duties)
- Lead the design and development of embedded systems for our solar tracking products.
- Coordinate cross-functionally between our cloud software team, product, engineering, supply chain, and field teams.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define embedded systems technical requirements and specifications.
- Develop and maintain firmware and embedded software for our devices that live in the field.
- Perform system integration and testing to ensure product performance and reliability.
- Test prototypes and/or final models to ensure proper functional behavior as defined by the product manager and product development team.
- Produce requirements of the embedded system for the support of supply chain in sourcing appropriate electronics components
- Produce detailed system drawings, specifications, and documentation for the product manager and support marketing in creation of customer facing artifacts.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for the controls commissioning teams during project installation as needed.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.
- Stay updated with innovative advancements in electronics, solar technology, industry trends, and emerging best practices to enhance design efficiency and effectiveness.
- Other duties as assigned.

Education / Experience (an equivalent combination of education and/or experience)
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- 10 years of Experience Area: Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering
Technical Skills
Technical Skills: Proficiency in C/C and Python; Experience with microcontroller programming (ARM, PIC, etc.); Knowledge of communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, etc.); Familiarity with version control (Git); Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS). Experience with MQTT machine to machine network protocol. Knowledge of wireless radio mesh networks.
Licenses / Certifications
- Certifications such as PMP, ARM™ Certification, Security Evaluation Standard for IoT Platforms (SESIP™) Level 2 and PSA Level 1 certifications, NABCEP Solar PV Associate or Professional Certification, CAN bus or I2C are beneficial but not required.
- AWS, Azure, or GCP certification(s) are a bonus.
