Overview
The Senior Estimator is responsible for preparing estimating components and estimates from start of bidding process through bid close-out. Duties include: Specification Review, Drawing Review, Coordination and performing quantity take-off, Means and Method Planning, Scheduling, Pricing all direct and indirect job costs, Soliciting and Scoping subcontractors and suppliers, and close-out of the bid. The Senior Estimator may manage portions of large estimates or complete smaller estimates. The Senior Estimator will be responsible for several scopes of work during the bid process.
Responsibilities
- Perform full quantity take-offs on projects and/or direct others in preparation of take-offs.
- Manage complete estimates on projects up to $100M with a focus on bridge and marine structures consisting of suspension bridges, girder bridges, movable bridges, cruise facilities and other complex structural steel and concrete structures.
- Complete component estimating on projects ranging from $100M to $3B+
- Solicitation of all required subcontractors and suppliers on each project. Ability to identify scope and delineate lines of responsibilities for subcontractors and suppliers.
- Develop bid schedule for internal purposes and CPM schedule for submission with bids as required.
- Responsible for cash flow analysis, buy/sell equipment analysis, developing risk register and proposal writing
- Active participant in pre-bid reviews.
- Must have the ability to translate conceptual design, project drawings, CPM schedule, and technical specifications of a bridge, marine, or complex construction projects in to full-scope cost estimates with accurate cost forecasting.
- Utilizes existing cost history, estimating software (HCSS, Blue Beam, P6, Procore, AutoCAD, etc.), and other resources to perform the company estimating function.
- Analyzes alternative solutions and construction methods to increase competitiveness of bids.
- Possesses thorough knowledge of estimating techniques, engineering means and methods, materials, construction techniques, and services.
- Establishes and maintains relationships with joint venture partners, consultants, subs, and suppliers.
- Establishes various data rate files for labor, equipment, and materials for the local market in which project is being bid.
- Travels to project sites to assess progress of various company-wide projects, attend project meetings, and perform site investigations as needed.
- Supports corporate safety initiatives in a company with a strong safety culture. Additionally, works safely and keep safety incidents to a minimum.
- Performs all other duties required during the project cycle and other duties as assigned by the Estimating Manager or Vice President, Estimating.
Other Skills and Abilities
- Must be able to legally work in the United States.
- Must be willing to work in a drug-free environment and agree to a post offer drug test.
- Must be willing to work safely and keep OSHA recordable incidents to a minimum.
- 7-10 years of progressive combined construction project management and estimating experience on bridges, structures, and/or heavy highway projects.
- 3-5+ years as an Estimator in the heavy civil industry. Experience through the entire project life cycle, from estimate to project closeout.
- Structural steel rehabilitation including retrofit, reinforcing and steel replacement is a plus.
- Rehabilitation of suspension bridges including main cable and suspender rehabilitation experience is a plus.
- Proven success in winning profitable bridge and heavy civil construction projects over $50M
- Proven success in winning large profitable bridge and heavy civil construction projects as part of a team of estimators over $500M.
- Experience working on various types of projects including Bid-Build (LS, Unit Price) Design-Build, CMGC, Joint Venture Projects.
- Experience in New Construction, Structural Repairs, and Demolition of Steel and Concrete Structures.
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills are a must.
- Ability to work independently on estimates up to $100M and as part of a larger team on estimates over $500M.
- Must be willing to travel as needed to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from four-year college or university; and 7-10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency in HCSS Heavy Bid, Electronic Takeoff Software, AutoCAD, Excel, Primavera P6 is a plus
Supervisory Responsibilities
Has mentoring responsibilities of Estimators and Co-ops (interns) within the company.

- Current driver's license
- P.E. licensure in the United States preferred, but not required.
