Senior Financial Analyst - Services - PetSmart

There are a lot of activities that happen in our stores so we have a strong cross-functional team focused on doing Anything for Pets by supporting the store teams through effective communications, processes and initiatives. The Store Strategy & Operations department leads the way to support all store activities and define business-driving strategies. The Workforce, Insights & Planning team owns labor optimization and reporting needs. The Operations & Innovation team owns merchandise execution, process improvement, compliance, store technology and innovation. And the Strategy team leads all the business-driving efforts for Salon, PetsHotel, Pet Training and In-store customer experience. These teams work diligently to ensure our associates, pets and pet parents are supported, while operating efficiently to drive the business.

Hybrid Position:

This position may be considered Hybrid based on PetSmart’s FlexSmart policy and business needs. A Hybrid work arrangement is considered to be a blend of onsite and remote work activity. Associates with a Hybrid work arrangement have a work space at Phoenix Home Office and can be required to come onsite between 1-5 days a week as determined by leadership and based on business needs.

The Services team is a subset within PetSmart’s store operations and represents more than $1B in annual sales. It is comprised of three distinct departments in Salon, Hotel (PetsHotel) and Training.

As part of this team, the Senior Services Financial Planning Analyst is focused on driving sales, margin and other KPI goals. The role will leverage analytical skill sets to provide data-driven recommendations and influence decision-making across the Services division.

Additionally, this position will be responsible for the development of accurate financial plans and forecasts that support achieving strategic and financial objectives. The successful candidate’s involvement in sales/margin forecasts and sales/promotional performance analysis will be critical in growing Services, an exciting and continuously growing business for PetSmart.

Essential Responsibilities

• Analyze sales results and anticipate trends, future opportunities and potential risks
• Develop yearly/monthly/weekly financial plans (sales, margin, class splits) in accordance with company goals, historical performance and trend analysis
• Conduct weekly analysis and monthly business forecasts
• Understands business performance, assessing the business impact of those results and summarizing the relevant data.
• Capturing, analyzing documenting key performance indicators (KPI) that accurately assess the health of the business.
• Supporting the communication and delivery of those KPI’s with relevant stakeholders on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.
• Make recommendations based on history, trend & competitive landscape to drive growth and efficiencies
• Create, Update, and Analyze plans and performance for key initiatives and communicate issues and opportunities
• Compile Postmortem recaps to inform sales and design of business trends
• Support Sales/Planning team with business analysis and ad-hoc reporting
• Partnering closely with FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis) and SSO (Store Strategy & Operations) Leadership in determining the desired business trajectory and developing the supporting financial/unit plans
• Recommend and implement strategies to maximize sales and margin opportunities while minimizing risk
• Partner with Services teams to influence sales initiatives and promotional plans
• Analyze and interpret complex data sets into understandable stories with key takeaways
• Develop and present financial recommendations to Senior Management, including Directors and VPs. Provides data-informed thought leadership to influence course of business strategies.
• Position is not involved in accounting/financial monthly close process

Reporting Structure

• Reports directly to Senior Manager, Services Financial Planning
• No direct reports

EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION

• Bachelor’s degree preferred, preferably with a business focus, or an equivalent blend of relevant experience and education
• Prior experience in a retail planner/analyst role or similar field
• Advanced analytical background required; Deep understanding of retail financial metrics/calculation
• Strong initiative and collaboration; Demonstrated ability to work independently
• Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment
• Proven organizational and multi-tasking skills
• 4+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills (i.e. critical and evaluative thinking) required
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal required. Ability to communicate effectively across many levels within the organization
• Ability to influence decisions by creating an excellent case for action, using analytical findings
• Expert in Excel tools, Pivot Tables, data manipulation and PowerPoint
