I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The Milken Institute School of Public Health (GWSPH) is a large, complex academic unit with a highly active research enterprise. The Finance Department of GWSPH is charged with overseeing and facilitating transparent financial plans and operations that align with the University and GWSPH goals and priorities. The team seeks a Senior Financial Analyst to contribute to the areas of financial operations, reporting, data modeling, and analysis. This position reports to the Finance Director and collaborates with faculty and staff throughout the School.

This senior position performs a wide variety of complex analytical and administrative duties to drive financial analysis, trending, and forecasting operations within GW School of Public Health, in addition to strategic financial planning. This position works closely with the department’s Finance Director and collaboratively with assigned departments.

Business responsibilities typically include collaborating with finance staff in preparation of multi-year budget projections and forecasts, detailed account analysis and tracking of trends, and recommendations for resource allocation. This position runs financials from the enterprise systems and provides periodic reports to the FD and manages FD and departments, including explanations for resource allocation and recommendations for corrective action during the year if needed.

Additional responsibilities include analyzing financial data to identify trends, analyzing and tracking research financials, mitigating potential risks, and researching industry best practices. This position identifies gaps in business processes and procedures and supports the FD and Managing FD in developing internal financial and budget management policies, procedures, and procedures to enhance information flow and maintain accurate records for the school. This role assists with developing financial models for key strategic and financial activities including new program initiatives, and creating and maintaining programmatic profitability analysis models with the FD and/or MFD. This position completes extensive reporting, including budget reports for several departments, ad-hoc reports, and other requests for financial information.

Responsibilities include:

• Monitor, analyze, and report on financial activity including those related to revenue and expenses, including compensation. This includes consultation with department heads and administrators regarding budget performance and planning, monthly reporting and account reconciliation, variance analysis, and quarterly projections. Identify areas of risk and recommend mitigation plans to the Managing Director.
• Develop, operationalize, and maintain timely, actionable reporting to Departments and other areas of the School.
• Contribute to the School’s annual budget planning process by assisting department heads and administrators in preparing funding requests related to revenue and compensation; projecting activity and resource needs for the 5- year plan; and assisting with the submission of the school’s revenue, position/compensation, and overall budgets in the University’s budget planning tool. Create budget planning templates, consolidate and reconcile submissions from departments, analyze variances, and ensure data consistency. Assist Managing FD and FD with inquiries from University stakeholders and prepare supporting analysis.
• Prepare analyses in support of business decisions and to identify trends by selecting data sources and analyzing data using Excel and other tools. Assist with developing financial models, maintaining models with up-to-date data, and measuring key performance indicators in order to forecast and evaluate program and department performance. Partner with School stakeholders to update and operationalize processes around tracking and modeling. Target presentation of results to multiple stakeholder audiences as appropriate.
• Process labor redistributions, and payroll.
• Collaborate with program staff to reconcile online program revenue and other contractual deliverables. Monitor and track contractual payments to and from GWSPH’s online program partner. Collaborate with program staff to ensure compliance with payment terms. Review supporting documentation and prepare invoices.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field is desired.

• Advanced Excel modeling and analysis skills are valued.

• Advanced financial reporting skills to include report design within a data warehouse environment are preferred.

• Experience in identifying and creating internal control systems is desired.

• Prior experience with Oracle, Banner, Concur, and other systems utilized at the University is highly preferred.

• Ability to operate with considerable independence and discretion, show good judgment, and take initiative.

• Strong analytical skills and be able to communicate financial information to a range of stakeholders are valued.

Hiring Range

$72,235.20 - $119,100.82
