Senior Formability Engineer - Novelis Global R&T

Position Overview:

The Automotive Customer Solution Center team, located in Novi, MI is seeking a Senior Formability Engineer. The individual in this role will report to the Lead Project Engineer. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of automotive sheet metal forming including, but not limited to, forming limit curves (FLC) and strain analysis, tribology/friction modeling, and forming simulations with development of forming data cards. Strong project management and data analysis skills and willingness to work hands-on are essential for success in this role. The candidate should be hard-working to become an expert in FLCs and forming card creation, working both independently and with others around Novelis to explore and understand to develop and improve processes.

Responsibilities:

• Lead projects to test materials and develop numerical models to simulate formability of aluminum materials including fundamental characteristics such as stress-strain curves, friction, work hardening, and microstructural effects.
• Develop stamping projects and trials to verify and improve the formability of new and existing sheet aluminum products using Novi CSC lab assets including 400T servo press, roll forming line, 20T hydraulic lab press with ARAMIS DIC and ARGUS strain analysis
• Utilize and improve AutoForm and Ubeco Profil forming simulation methods and capabilities for sheet aluminum forming and formability evaluations.
• Develop and implement a process for creating, managing and reviewing automotive material forming data.

Minimum Qualifications:

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science & Engineering or equivalent
• 7-11 years of experience in sheet metal formability/stamping/roll forming
• Extensive experience in the use of a broad range of analytical techniques and modelling tools such as AutoForm for simulating sheet metal forming
• Ability to self-manage and flexibility to adapt work to meet organizational needs
• Fundamental understanding of sheet material processing and evaluations
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work well with and transfer complex technical concepts to a diverse audience

Preferred Qualifications:

• M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science & Engineering or equivalent
• Strong understanding of sheet aluminum flat rolled sheet products and properties
• Proficiency in Autoform R7+ (sheet formability simulation) and/or Ubeco Profil (roll forming simulation)
• Familiarity with roll forming, bending or hot forming processes
