Responsibilities:The responsibilities for this field-based position involve supervising construction contractor project activities and work to ensure conformance with the project plans, specifications, special provisions, engineering, and environmental plans. The primary responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to;
- Inspect and approve all contractor sitework, ensure conformance with contract documents, and quality standards of contract, inform of substandard conformance of work, and ensure remedial action is taken.
- Prepare daily inspection reports documenting all project work activities and events.
- Perform field measurement and assessment of project work completed, perform computations to verify pay quantities.
- Collaborate and assist Resident Engineer with project work issues, correction of substandard nonconforming work, and negotiation of extra work items.
- Ability to analyze and evaluate constructability issues and provide effective solutions.
- Considerable technical skills in preparation of engineering and administrative reports.
- Verify and approve contractor submitted materials, components, and methods, ensure minimum material testing requirements are met.
- Participate in project meetings, prepare meeting minutes, and follow up action items.
- Collaborate and coordinate with contractor project managers and utility company representatives to avoid work conflicts and schedule delays.
- Collaborate with the public, property, and business owners, when required, to address issues and concerns resulting from construction activities.
- Monitor Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (M&PT) operations to ensure compliance with project safety plans, and safety for the traveling public.
- Monitor contractor compliance with environmental permits, AA and EEO plans.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability:
Considerable knowledge of principles and practices utilized on complex CTDOT highway and bridge construction projects including work utilized to perform roadway construction, excavations, grading, drainage and paving, bridge structural steel installation and repairs, concrete deck, foundation, and parapet construction and repairs, utility installations and relocations; considerable technical skills in preparation of engineering and administrative reports; skill and ability to analyze and evaluate engineering, highway, structural and pavement design, hydraulic and traffic problems and provide effective solutions; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to perform complex mathematical calculations; ability to develop and interpret plans and specifications.
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience:
Four (4) years of field inspection experience working on applicable civil construction projects.
Must be able to read and understand complex construction plans, and specifications.
Must be able to write detailed daily inspection reports and perform complex quantity and engineering computations.
Must have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
Must have experience using Microsoft Word and Excel,
Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or construction management and four (4) years of experience in transportation construction engineering or transportation engineering.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Work experience functioning at the level of Senior Inspector on a CTDOT construction project.
- Work experience utilizing using AASHTOWare and COMPASS for construction management and document control.
- ACI Certification
- NETTCP Concrete
- NETTCP HMA Paving
- NETTCP Soils and Aggregate
- ATSSA Traffic Control Technician
- OSHA 10 Hour Construction Safety and Health
Special Requirements:
- Candidate must possess and retain a valid NICET HCI Level III certification.
- Candidate must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and auto insurance.
- Candidate must have reliable transportation.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to perform work year-round in varied weather conditions, and during off-hours and weekends when necessary.
Candidate shall have adequate physical ability and shall maintain such for proper continuation of job performance.
