Senior Medical Physicist (PhD) - Radiation Therapy - Bayfront Health - Bayfront Health

1. Administrative
1.1 In collaboration with the Chairman of the Department of Radiation
Oncology, the Administrator, the Chief Therapist and the Nurse Manager,
plan for the proper allocation of Department resources, incljuding
equipment usage, selection and replacement; staffing requirements,
assignment and recruitment; budget preparation; program operation and
continuing review of policies and procedures.
1.2 Directly supervise physicists, dosimetrists and Therapists.
1.3 Authorize purchase of equipment, supplies etc. as required for the routine
operation of the Department.
1.4 Develop and administer a comprehensive maintenance program for all
major equipment within the Department.
1.5 Develop and administer a comprehensive Quality Assurance (QA)
program for all treatment modalities, localization procedures and
computational equipment and programs sufficient to assure the accurate
delivery of prescribed dose to patients.
1.6 Collaborate with the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to develop and
administer a comprehensive radiation safety program in compliance with
relevant State of Florida Department of Health rules and regulations and
licenses, including a personnel radiation monitoring program.
1.7 Monitor on a regular basis the performance of the therapy staff and
treatment areas and provide the necessary equipment and support to assure
the accurate delivery of patient treatments.

2. Consultative
2.1 Develop performance, acceptance testing and commissioning specifications
for all newly acquired equipment. Approve for clinical use. Review staff
training and competency.
2.2 Calculate, or review, and certify for use all shielding for new or modified
radiation areas.
2.3 Collaborate, as requested, with the Radiation Oncologist and/or physics
and/or dosimetry staff on individual patient treatment plans using all
appropriate treatment modalities available within the Department of
Radiation Oncology.
2.4 Develop, or review, and approve for clinical use new or non-standard
treatment techniques.
2.5 Provide, as requested, statistical analysis for evaluation of treatment
efficacy.
2.6 Review and approve for use all necessary charts and tables for all treatment
units to enable the accurate calculation of patient treatments.
2.7 Evaluate and approve for use new or improved treatment aids applicators
or instruments.
2.8 Research and evaluate new developments in the field of Radiation
Oncology to assess the need for and acquisition of new or improved
equipment for simulation, planning or treatment.

3. Treatment Planning
3.1 Evaluate all treatment machine specific data required for accurate
calculation of patient treatments. Verify accuracy of computer
calculations and approve for clinical use. Review regularly and update as
required in accordance with established QA program.
3.2 Review and approve for clinical use all new and special treatment
procedures. Periodically review current treatment procedures and update as
required. Initiate and periodically review a written procedure manual for
standard calculation techniques.
3.3 Calculate or review and approve for submission benchmark calculations and
studies done for formal clinical trials and protocols. Review before
treatment protocol patients and review the documentation of their treatment
before submission.

4. Maintenance and Quality Assurance (QA)
4.1 Periodically review QA records of all radiation producing equipment to
assure it’s proper function and to identify possible trends or impending
breakdowns.
4.2 Perform or review regular calibrations and routine QA checks on all
radiation producing equipment. Perform and evaluate annual calibration of
all radiation producing equipment and maintain appropriate records.
Update treatment planning computer systems, charts and tables as
appropriate.
4.3 Review results of test procedures for computer software updates and
approve for clinical use.
4.4 Supervise the maintenance of the radioactive materials storage area.
Supervise the preparation and handling of radioactive material for patient
treatment and maintain appropriate records.
4.5 Develop, implement and periodically review a program of in-vivo
dosimetry.
4.6 Develop and administer a comprehensive program of maintenance and
calibration of instrumentation used for the calibration of radiation sources
(linear accelerator, HDR, etc.), measurement of radiation dose and
monitoring of patient and staff exposure

Education/Training
Doctoral degree in medical physics or the physical sciences

Licensure/Certification
Current license in the State of Florida as a Therapeutic Radiological Physicist. License
must be renewed every two years.
Current certification as a Therapeutic Radiologic Physicist (ABR TRP) by the American
Board of Radiology. Certifications received prior to 2002 are not time limited and do not
require renewal, while those received 2002 or later must be renewed every 10 years.

Experience
Three years full time clinical experience working under the direction of a physicist
certified by the American Board of Radiology, or equivalent training
