Southwest Electric Co. Is looking for a Senior Protective Relay and Control Specialist for our Nashville Field Service location.
Senior Protective Relay and Control Specialist Summary:
Conduct commissioning, testing, maintenance and repair of complex protective relaying schemes, metering remote control and data systems and capacitor control in generation, transmission and distribution substation environments. To facilitate the retrofit, upgrade, and replacement projects for electrical controls, SCADA, DCS and Power System Protection Equipment.Senior Protective Relay and Control Specialist Duties and Responsibilities:
- Testing of Electro-mechanical, Numerical and Microprocessor based Protective Relays and control devices.
- Perform installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance of protective relaying equipment, relaying schemes, DFR equipment, SCADA systems, distribution automation systems and associated communication equipment
- Test over current/voltage, Directional, Distance, Impedance, Sync Check, Loss of field, reverse power, Multifunction relays etc.
- Perform function testing of substation control circuits on relay panel, transformers & circuit breaker change outs.
- Conduct differential and distance relay testing.
- Assist in developing written standard commissioning, testing and maintenance procedures for protective relaying, DFR's, RTU's, IED's, Distribution Automation and associated communication systems.
- Interpreting customer and sales submitted technical documents, quotations, and service requests and applying that data directly to the quoted task at hand.
- Communicating technical information clearly and concisely to management and customers.
- Travel to job locations, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and properly applying pertinent technical and safety standards to the assigned work. i.e. (IEEE, NETA, NEMA, NEC).
- Creating test reports and summaries of work completed.
- Assist in training service technicians in basic protective relay and control systems.
- Must be willing and able to travel on overnight, multi-day, out of town jobs.
- Must be willing and able to work regular overtime including nights, weekends and some holidays.
- May be called on to lead switchgear/substation trainees and technicians on field service projects, as well as ensure safety and customer work requirements are met by field crews.
- Accurately recording and reporting work time.
- Creation of new test routines for processes used in customer service and field work.
- Contribute to Quality Control documentation of test procedures.

Senior Protective Relay and Control Specialist: :
- Due to the nature of the work, incumbents must have the physical ability to safely stand, sit, walk, use hands, arms and legs, balance, stoop repeatedly bent, twist and climb stairs and ladders.
- Climb structures using aerial lift devices, repeatedly move wrists, reach overhead, work in elevated positions, confined and underground spaces and in close proximity to electrically energized, high voltage equipment and lines.
- Must be able to lift 50+ lbs.
- Must have good vision with visual color discrimination in order to determine color wire and insulators.

- The typical work environment is industrial locations, indoor and outdoor settings; although usually moderate, temperatures can range between extreme hot and cold weather conditions.
- Working near moving mechanical parts and around energized high-voltage equipment.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen, and physical.
- Complete a satisfactory nationwide criminal background check.
- Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
- Ability to lift 50 + lbs., climb ladders, stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to work for extended periods which includes overtime, weekends and holidays with minimal notice
- High School Diploma or GED REQUIRED
- Trade/Tech school with 10 years of proven OTJ experience in Power Systems Protection and Controls.
- Or: Equivalent Military training plus proven OTJ experience in Power Systems Protection and Controls.
- Or: University/College 24-year Engineering Technology plus related Power System Protection experience.
Senior Protective Relay and Control Specialist Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- AVO, NETA, NICET, certifications and CDL are desired but not required at this time.
