About the Job
Major/Essential Functions
- Provides support to the Laboratory Safety Manager in the implementation of the chemical and biological safety programs for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, including regional campuses.
- Surveys research and clinical laboratories for compliance with federal, state, local, and institutional laboratory safety rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines; conducts operational inspections of chemical fume hoods, safety showers, and eyewash stations; maintains data/records regarding laboratory surveys, equipment inspections, laboratory certification, and laboratory worker credentialing.
- Assists the Laboratory Safety Manager with the review of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) protocols and serves as an alternate member of both the IACUC and IBC.
- Performs complex safety and health program work.
- Work involves developing safety policies and procedures; participating in the safety training and education of staff; inspecting work areas and activities for hazards; and investigating accidents
- May train others. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Preferred Qualifications
- BS in basic sciences preferred (Chemistry, Biology, etc.); safety certifications such as ASP, CSP, CHMM, OHST, etc.
- Decision-making and reasoning should be based on knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures as applicable to the laboratory work environment.
- Two years work experience in occupational, environmental health and safety or research laboratory, or combination of training and work experience equivalent to six years.

Occasional Duties
- Uses and maintains computer databases for laboratory safety.
- Assists in conducting laboratory safety inspections, audits, and surveys
- Assists stakeholders in maintaining chemical and biological inventories.
- Assists in the development, production and presentation of safety training and safety programs.
- Analyzes laboratory inspections, surveys, hazards and incidents, registrations, and follow-up.
- Prepares equipment and instrument calibration reports.
- Prepares reports on laboratory inspections, audits, surveys, inventories, fume hoods, safety showers, and eyewash stations
- Assists with maintenance of laboratory safety records and databases; analysis of PI protocols, registrations and inventories.
- Prepares periodic reports and summaries of the laboratory safety program.
- Assists in response of HAZMAT incidents involving hazardous materials and assists in cleanup and decontamination, if necessary.
- Conducts periodic inspections and checks of fume hoods, safety showers and eyewash stations.

Required Qualifications
Proficiency in written and mathematical processes as may be reflected by completion of high school and two years of college level work in Occupation Health and Safety with course work in assigned area. Four years of job related experience. Additional job-related education may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local laws pertaining to occupational safety. General knowledge of safety procedures as related to assigned tasks. Ability to assist in the execution of a program of campus safety. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely.
