Senior Scientist, Tomato Technology at a glance...
The Senior Scientist, Tomato Technology, provides laboratory and biochemistry technical expertise, and leadership in the research of tomato technology. The incumbent is responsible for leading all aspects of the tomato technology laboratories located in Los Banos, CA (90%) and Stockton, CA (10%), including hands-on work and supervising and directing lab personnel. The Senior Scientist plays a principal role in researching the chemical, biochemical, and rheological properties of tomatoes and tomato processing to search for practical applications of such properties to tomato variety development, tomato processing, and tomato products.
What's on the menu?
- Conduct research and become an authoritative resource on tomato chemistry, biochemistry, and rheology.
- Select, size, and design protocols of laboratory and process monitoring equipment.
- Identify best existing laboratory technology to test presently supervised tomato (and tomato products) properties and standards. And to test the chemistry, biochemistry, rheology and performance of tomatoes and tomato in-process and finished products.
- Identify and/or adapt best existing laboratory technology to measure tomato maturity
- Set and calibrate laboratory, assist selecting, setting, and calibrating process chemistry/rheology monitoring instruments
- Periodically review and update laboratory operation, cleaning, maintenance, and safety manuals.
- Train and supervise seasonal and temporary laboratory personnel.
- Review and laboratory and process data. Responsible for the Laboratory Tomato Technology data system as set by the Engineer.
- Confirm process data entries accuracy to ensure compliance to experimental procedures to ensure compliance with approved and required methods and standards
- Statistically analyze laboratory, process, and product data, develop correlations, and theories.
- Be able to organize all seasonal Preventative Maintenances, order all lab supplies, and partner with vendors to secure the best prices, deals, and services in preparation for tomato season.
- Supervise the quality of paste externally processed for Kraft Heinz use
- Providing seasonal training/technical support to paste supplier’s laboratories as needed.
- Supervising the paste sampling collection and laboratory testing
- Statistically analyze laboratory, process, and product data to develop correlation, theories and proposals for product quality improvement, efficiency, and profitability.
- Provide off-tomato-season support to other researchers in the KHC Agricultural R&D group.

- Bachelor's of Science in Food Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Process Technology preferred; Master's degree in related field is a plus
- 5+ years’ experience in tomato product quality or R&D required.
- Experienced in fruit or vegetable research and processing.
- Experienced in rheology and flow mechanic’s research.
- Strong project management experience
- Ability to effectively collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and statistical analysis software, e.g., Minitab.
- Fluent in speaking and writing in English,
- Conversational Spanish an asset.
- Hands-on leader, capable of temporarily operating and supervising manufacturing systems.
- Available to work long hours and weekends at site during tomato harvest and processing season (July – October).
- Available for domestic travel, as needed.

Stockton FactoryBase Salary Range: $85,400.00 - $106,800.00Target Total Cash Range: $106,750.00 - $133,500.00
Target total cash represents this role's annualized cash earning potential at target (base salary + target bonus). Target total cash is contingent on targeted company performance achievement and individual attainment of performance goals. Therefore, target total cash is not guaranteed earnings.
The compensation offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.
