We provide real-time access to critical data from any ocean on earth, 24/7/365, and use proprietary software applications to transform that data into actionable insights and intelligence. Our fleet of uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs), powered by renewable wind and solar power, have a minimal carbon footprint and operate without the need for a crewed support vessel.

Saildrone works with governments, civil agencies, foundations, universities, and private companies around the globe to drive better information about our oceans and seas—from sailing into the eye of a category 4 hurricane to obtain new data about how storms intensify, collecting new CO2 data in hard-to-reach areas, and counting fish biomass to inform sustainable fishery management, to mapping the ocean floor and reducing illegal fishing and drug trafficking. The Role

Saildrone’s security team is growing! As we expand our customer base and mission portfolio, we face an ever-evolving threat landscape. Our vehicles operate far from home, for months at a time, everywhere from crowded inland waterways to remote nature sanctuaries to contested waters. You will have a direct hand in making sure our drones, data, and platform provide reliable service at all times. This includes responsibilities like:

• Designing, building, and operating automated security systems for our drones and shore-side systems
• Reviewing designs and code from other engineering teams, with an eye toward security defects
• Responding to security incidents as part of a rotating on-call schedule
• Assessing the company's compliance with security standards, like NIST 800-171 or ISO 27001
• Testing the company's security posture through manual and automated means, including tabletop exercises, penetration tests, and offensive scanners

Required Skills and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a computer-related engineering field
• Five to eight years of progressing industry experience
• At least two languages from the set {Python, C/C++, TypeScript} and one other language
• Infrastructure automation frameworks such as Ansible, Terraform, or Puppet
• Cloud providers and their services, especially Amazon Web Services
• Previous security experience of some sort: security development, network security, cloud security, etc.

Desired Skills and Experience

• Master’s degree in a computer-related engineering field
• One or more of the following:
• Kubernetes and container technologies
• Familiarity with PKI standards and applied cryptography
• IoT or robotics technologies, including firmware, CAN architectures, and real-time operating systems
• Ability to obtain a security clearance

Physical Requirements

• Regular use of a computer while sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. Travel up to 10% domestic and international required.

Location: This position is hybrid in Alameda, CA or hybrid in Washington DC (3 days per week onsite).
