The Lead Systems Administrator will provide advanced systems administration and support services for the Department of State's Foreign Service Institute (FSI) in Rosslyn, VA. This individual will serve as the alternate Key Program Manager (KPM) in the absence of the primary KPM. The position requires expert-level knowledge of systems administration, desktop support, and leadership capabilities. The role also demands proficiency in working with upper-level government staff and contractors, preparing well-written reports, and maintaining a professional demeanor.

Position Overview

Key Responsibilities
- Perform all duties of the Systems Administrator position, including LAN system administration, Active Directory management, software/hardware installation, troubleshooting, and problem resolution.
- Act as the Alternate Key Program Manager (KPM) when the KPM is unavailable, managing the project in accordance with contract requirements.
- Oversee help desk operations, supervise help desk staff, assign tasks, and ensure timely resolution of user issues.
- Generate clear, error-free reports and documentation, including weekly status reports, system documentation, and user guides.
- Ensure adherence to Department of State Diplomatic Security Configuration Standards and implement security best practices for FSI networks.
- Expert knowledge of FSI Desktop support services.
- Utilize appropriate judgment to provide exceptional customer support to FSI staff, faculty, and students in a professional manner.
- Interface with high-level government officials, contractors, and stakeholders, providing technical expertise and maintaining positive relationships.
- Support FSI’s LAN/WAN environment, including over 2,800 desktops and 80 servers in Active Directory, and virtualized environments.
- Conduct information assurance scanning and vulnerability assessments using tools such as Tenable, Web Inspect, and Tripwire.
- Ensure compliance with the Department of State's IT and security policies, maintain network integrity, and apply software updates and patches as required.
- Mentor and train new systems administrators, providing leadership in technical and operational matters.
- Act in accordance with FSI’s professional standards during interactions with both internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Security Clearance: Active Top Secret
- Experience: 10 years of experience in systems administration, including desktop support services in government environments.
- FSI Knowledge: Specific knowledge of FSI operations, infrastructure, and the integration of educational technology is required.
- Technical Skills:
- Expertise in managing Windows-based LANs, Active Directory, server environments, and desktop configurations.
- Proficiency in information assurance tools and security best practices, including vulnerability scanning.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve hardware/software issues promptly and efficiently.
- Leadership and Communication:
- Proven ability to lead help desk teams, assign tasks, and mentor staff.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce detailed and error-free reports.
- Experience interfacing with high-level government personnel and contract staff.
- Certifications: Relevant certifications in systems administration and information assurance are preferred (e.g., Security, CISSP, or equivalent).
- Location: Rosslyn, VA (Washington, DC Metro Area).
- Work Hours: Standard operating hours with potential after-hours support for emergencies and planned maintenance.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to travel to onsite locations as needed, and work in an office setting with government-provided equipment.
