WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Traffic Engineer for our San Diego or Irvine, CA office to be involved in projects with our California Transportation Team and to be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
Provides technical assistance and guidance for planning, engineering, design, and operation of streets and highways, their networks, adjacent land uses, and interaction with other modes of transportation with a focus on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Complete Streets. Tasks may include performing capacity analyses, and assisting with the planning, design, concept development, and construction of highways, roadways, active transportation facilities, transit facilities, and traffic signal design and timing. Substantiates reports and documentation regarding materials and construction specifications. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
Your Impact
- Determine well-defined methods for collecting, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, GIS data, maps, technical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
- Perform professional traffic engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
- Develop and design innovative concepts for intersection and corridor improvements, including near term initiatives and longer-term capital improvement projects and studies, that require coordination with authorities, sub-consultants, and clients.
- Design communications networks and traffic signal improvements to facilitate real time corridor operations.
- Develop or incorporate advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, transportation vehicles/systems, and incorporate future-ready solutions with traffic engineering design standards.
- Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects, assist with laying out roadways, establishing reference points/elevations/grades to guide construction, calculating costs and quantities of material/equipment/labor, and ensuring project work conforms with specifications, permit applications, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
- Provide technical assistance on traffic engineering studies, capacity analyses, traffic complaint investigation, traffic plan review, signal system design, monitoring and control, and operations analysis to ensure roadways are designed in a safe and efficient way.
- Work closely with developers and builders to determine the impact that a new structure, development, or construction project might have on the road system and makes recommendations to mitigate impacts.
- Initiate, direct, and apply the results of studies and program reviews in order to evaluate existing and projected transportation systems, traffic impacts of proposed developments, recommending traffic safety enhancement projects on the basis of respective studies.
- Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
- Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
- Assist with development and scoping of medium-sized projects.
- Provide guidance and training to entry-level engineers.
- Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or opportunities.
- Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
- Remain current in latest traffic engineering techniques and practices.
- Work collaboratively with other engineers, planners, scientific professionals, and DOT authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded road and transportation improvement and development projects.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline.
- 5 to 7 years of relevant post education experience in engineering and prior traffic design experience.
- Engineer in Training Certification.
- Proficient knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, process, and design/build related to traffic control equipment, capacity and operational analysis, project management, and related communications.
- Experience with roadway planning, design, and construction management; including project involvement in a variety of larger infrastructure projects, navigational aids, grading design, and safety management.
- Working knowledge of relevant roadway transportation construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
- Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including tracking hours and expenses.
- Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of transportation corridors, applying applicable regulations and policies.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
- Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
- Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, AutoCAD, Microstation, or similar software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Proficiency with traffic analysis software, Synchro 11, Vissim, Visum, Sidra, Aimsun, or similar.
- Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
- Ability to assertively direct others in the field to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Engineering.
- Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
- Experience managing small to mid-size projects.

Compensation
Expected Salary: $69,600 - $157,000
WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
