Summary:
The Sheet Metal Engineer will design, develop, and oversee the production of sheet metal components and assemblies. This role involves a blend of hands-on shop floor experience, design expertise, and project management skills. The ideal candidate will also be experienced in welding, fixture design, and mentoring team members.
Key Responsibilities*:
Teach and mentor operators to run laser and press brake
- Design and Development:
- Develop detailed designs for sheet metal components, assemblies, and structures.
- Utilize CAD software (Autodesk Products) to create and modify designs.
- Develops final tooling and fixture designs utilizing CAD software in accordance with LMC manufacturing standards and best practices
- Works with internal LMC toolmakers to determine best practices and methods for tooling, fixtures and required items needed by manufacturing to meet customer requests
- Collaborates with the LMC Quality department to ensure each new product development effort meets our ISO 9001 quality procedures and customer requirements
- Works with both internal and external tooling personnel to have required tooling and fixtures fabricated in accordance with quoted requirements of the project
- Works with shop employees on best practices regarding setting up and running CNC Press Brakes
- Ensure designs meet industry standards, safety regulations, and customer requirements.
- Manufacturing and Fabrication:
- Oversee the fabrication process of sheet metal components, including cutting, bending, welding, and assembly.
- Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are accurately produced.
- Works with shop employees on best practices regarding setting up and running CNC Press Brakes
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to manufacturing and assembly processes.
- Quality Assurance:
- Develop and implement quality control procedures to ensure products meet specifications and standards.
- Perform inspections and tests on completed components and assemblies.
- Identify and address any discrepancies or defects in the manufacturing process.
- Project Management:
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively.
- Coordinate with suppliers and vendors to procure materials and components.
- Prepare and present technical reports and documentation.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with other engineers, designers, and stakeholders to integrate sheet metal components into larger systems.
- Teach and mentor operators to run laser and press brake
- Provide technical support and guidance to team members and clients.
- Communicate project status, challenges, and solutions effectively.
*Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field with 5 years' experience or
- Proven experience in sheet metal design and fabrication, with 10 years of experience
- Proficiency in CAD software (Autodesk Products) and other engineering tools.
- Strong understanding of sheet metal manufacturing processes and techniques.
- Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to sheet metal engineering.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Works with manufacturing supervision and employees to ensure a smooth first run of new products which may include training and hands-on assistance
- Works with Engineering and Operations leaders to achieve cost reduction goals
- Identifies, presents and implements approved continuous improvement ideas and methods into LMC manufacturing of products and services
- Serves as a resource to Operations on continuous improvement activities and corrective and preventive action problem solving
- Works with internal LMC toolmakers to determine best practices and methods for tooling, fixtures and required items needed by manufacturing to meet customer requests
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- New product development experience
- Lean manufacturing experience or training
- Manufacturing quality systems and ISO experience
- Formal project management training or experience
- Knowledge of engineering specifications as they relate to metals, plating, coatings, welding, etc.
- Ability to create and use Gantt charts
- Understanding of processes related to quoting, engineering changes, drawing control and tooling and capital purchases
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
- Ability to work individually or in a group setting to achieve company goals and initiatives
- Willingness and ability to always work with strict timeline adherence
- Experience with Auto-Cad (Autodesk Inventor)
- Knowledge of GD&T and 3-2-1 datum schemes
- Participates in an annual personal business plan for individual skill set improvement and training
- Ability to react and succeed in an ever-changing manufacturing environment
- Ability to act as a member, leader, subordinate and colleague within the LMC Engineering department
- Ability to work within approved budgets, develops, presents and implements approved cost saving measures, contributes to profits and revenue of the company
- Ability to conduct both internal and external company business in a professional and civil manner at all times
Education:
- BS degree in Engineering or related discipline or equivalent experience
- Five (5) or more years' experience in a manufacturing operation
Environment:
- Office and manufacturing environment
