Position: Shelter Monitor
Program: Dolores Street Shelter Program
Compensation: $23 per hour. Full-time, non-exempt position. Program Description:
Dolores Shelter Program (DSP) has offered assistance to homeless people from this country and others since 1982, fulfilling its mission to target the community in the Mission area. Through the Dolores Shelter Program, we offer a total of 108 shelter beds distributed in 4 sites: Martha, Maria, Ana, and Jazzie's Place- The first LGBTQIA Adult Shelter in the country. Our sites operate 365 days a year. Our staff provides direct services as well as referrals to other programs and services. Our greatest challenge is to help our participants break the cycle of homelessness that affects so many people in our city.
Position Objective:
Under the supervision of the Dolores Shelter Program Manager and the Shelter Manager, Shelter Monitors are responsible for the operation and security of the shelter site and the supervision of the shelter guests. We are currently seeking monitors. All shelters operate 7 days per week. Weekends are required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Facilitate daily check-in and check-out procedures of clients and other regular routines
- Meet the physical demands of the position: stay awake during any assigned shift, lift approximately 30 pounds, navigate stairs and narrow work spaces, use a standard phone and computer, and work independently
- Ensure safety and security within the shelter sites and respond to emergency situations, as necessary
- Submit reports to management, as needed, using daily logs, forms, rounds logs, nutrition logs, email, and phone calls
- Occasionally assist with emergency shift coverage on short notice
- Complete the assigned shifts as expected
- Attend required staff meetings and trainings

- Conduct business in accordance with the Mission Action Employee Handbook, exercising sound judgment and serving the best interests of the agency and the community
- Work within the framework of the agency's mission, vision, values, theory of change, and organization's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, restorative justice, trauma-informed work, and language justice.
- Commit yourself to treating each community member with respect and dignity
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience Desired
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position
- Written and oral communication in English
- Commitment to social justice issues, and familiarity with Mission Action's mission and organizational work
- Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask and prioritize work, required
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Bilingual Spanish/English, spoken and written - enough for instructions and basic communications, (Fluency strongly preferred)
- Basic computer proficiency (MS Word, e-mail)
- At least 2 years of experience providing services to low-income, homeless adults or day laborers, LGBT and/or immigrant communities. (Volunteer experience, customer service experience and transferable skills will be considered.)
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
