About the Job
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office seeks Sheriff's Corrections Assistant Trainees to establish an eligibility list for the John J. Benoit Detention Center located in Indio. This list may also be used to fill future vacancies throughout Riverside County.
The Sheriff's Corrections Assistant Trainee is the entry-level classification within the Sheriff's Corrections Assistant series assigned to the jail Business Office and reports to a supervisory or manager level position. The incumbent will work in a training capacity performing the more routine specialized clerical duties and under the immediate supervision of a Supervising Sheriff's Corrections Assistant or a correctional or sworn sergeant, learn the more complex and difficult specialized tasks. The incumbent will be required to work rotating shifts (12 hours), weekends, nights, holidays, irregular hours, and may be required to work overtime.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Receive and process court documents and interpret court proceedings to determine which inmates are to be released or detained; ensure inmates are sent to the correct court on the proper date and time.
• Process the Business Office portion of inmate booking and input charges into the Jail Information Management System (JIMS); run queries through the California Law Enforcement Tracking System (CLETS) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer automated criminal information tracking systems; review booking charges for accuracy and apply bail schedule and rules to determine if charge(s) are eligible for bail.
• Verify court information in an inmate's booking file and apply appropriate rules/ regulations to compute the inmate's sentence(s) to determine proper discharge date.
• Receive cash or Postal Money Orders for inmates and credit proper inmate accounts; reconcile daily receipts and register transactions.
• Prepare documents and update files within JIMS for those inmates being transferred to other federal, state, or local agencies; may coordinate with appropriate agency liaison for the transfer of inmate(s) to their facility.
• Prepare daily court calendar to ensure that inmates are transported to the proper courtroom and appear on the correct court schedule.
• Review accounts for Probable Cause Forms in all new inmate-booking files; send Probable Cause Statements to the appropriate court and judge, and monitor their decision to determine the appropriate action for the inmates.
• Calculate appropriate bail amounts by applying penal codes and bail table rules/regulations; answer telephone inquiries from bail bond agents and the public regarding bail and release information.
• Perform other clerical tasks including filing, faxing, routing telephone calls to appropriate staff, and operating a variety of office equipment.
• Order supplies and equipment by monitoring inventory levels and prepare proper paperwork.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:Graduation from high school, possession of a certificate of proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. examination.
Experience: One year of clerical experience. (Completion of 18 semester or 27 quarter units from an accredited college or university in secretarial sciences, office practices, business administration, or a closely related field to the assignment OR completion of 260 hours of training from a recognized occupation training program in secretarial science, business education or a closely related field to the assignment may be substituted for the required experience.)
Knowledge of: Modern office procedures; correct English usage including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Ability to: Perform general clerical work; learn complex computerized criminal information software; learn the procedures and details of legal documents pertaining to criminal records/warrants in a correctional facility; establish effective working relationships with others and communicate tactfully and courteously with the public and peers; accurately perform basic arithmetic computations; follow oral and written directions; process specialized Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) documents; learn all applicable law enforcement related codes, rules, regulations, and laws; meet department production and accuracy standards.
Physical requirements: Primarily working in an office setting but depending on the assignment some light travel to various locations.

License:Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

MISCELLANEOUS RETIREMENT: County of Riverside has three retirement Tiers through the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
- Tier I (Classic Member - Formula 3% @ 60): Applicable to current and former County of Riverside local miscellaneous employees hired prior to 08/24/2012 and did not withdraw CalPERS contributions. The employee contribution is eight (8%) percent.
- Tier II (Classic Member - Formula 2% @ 60): Applicable to local miscellaneous employees 1) hired after 08/23/2012 through 12/31/2012; 2) Previously employed with another CalPERS contracting public agency or a reciprocal retirement system, with a break in service of less than six months between the separation date with the previous employer and the appointment date with the County of Riverside. The employee contribution is seven (7%) percent.
- Tier III (PEPRA New Member - Formula 2% @ 62): Applicable to CalPERS local miscellaneous new members hired on or after the implementation of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) which took effect January 1, 2013. Effective July 1, 2023 employee contributions are 7.25% and will increase to 7.75% effective July 1, 2024.
A new member is defined as any of the following:
CalPERS refers to all members that do not fit within the definition of a new member as "classic members".

DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Voluntary employee contribution with a choice between two 457 deferred compensation plan options.
VACATION ACCRUAL (Bi-Weekly Accrual):
0< 3 year = 80 Hours (10 Days)
4< 9 years = 120 Hours (15 Days)
10 or more years = 160 Hours (20 Days)
Maximum Vacation leave accumulation is 480 hours.
SICK LEAVE: Four (4) hours Sick Leave accrual per pay period with unlimited accrual.
HOLIDAYS: Normally 12 paid holidays per year
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: Allowed 5 days (3 days are County paid; 2 additional days can be taken from accrued Sick Leave balance)
BASIC LIFE INSURANCE: Equal to one times annual base salary not to exceed $50,000 of term life coverage. Premiums are paid by the County. Additional Supplemental Life plan is available for employee purchase.
DISABILITY: Short-term Disability benefit pays up to a maximum of $461.54 weekly, payable up to a maximum of 52 weeks.
POST RETIREMENT MEDICAL CONTRIBUTION: A monthly contribution is made by the County towards retiree health insurance offered through the County as governed by the applicable Memorandum of Understanding.
