JOB SUMMARY

Works directly for the Manager of EMS and is primarily responsible for ensuring successful EMS operations during assigned shift. Shift supervisors work in conjunction with the EMS Medical Director, fellow EMS employees, employees of CCH and other healthcare facilities, and public service agencies to provide exceptional patient and family care in the pre-hospital and interfacility transfer settings. Shift supervisors lead, direct, and supervise all assigned employees in various activities including, but not limited to, patient care, documentation, training, quality improvement/assurance, public education/relation events, special event standbys, car seat inspections, and facility and ambulance maintenance. Additionally, shift supervisors are responsible for staff scheduling, coordination of vehicle maintenance, the medical supplies inventory, and medication/controlled substance inventory and chain of custody. Shift supervisors also actively participate in the planning, budgeting, and execution of the mission, vision, values, and goals of the EMS department and CCH.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Performs all primary job functions contained in the paramedic job description. Should be outlined specifically.
• Responds to emergencies, makes independent decisions, coordinates, and directs the activities of personnel while prioritizing provider and patient safety.
• Supervises EMT’s, AEMT’s, IEMT’s, paramedics, RN’s, students, volunteers, and other riders assigned to their shift or floating to their shift. Evaluates work, and performs training and education of subordinate staff including EMT’s, AEMT’s, IEMT’s, paramedics, RN’s, students, and volunteers in various phases of emergency medical care and in other job-related duties and assignments.
• Conducts self in accordance with the CCH Standards of Excellence handbook and Code of Conduct policy.
• Complies with the CCH Corporate Compliance Program, applicable federal/state/local laws, and policies and procedures of CCH and the EMS department.
• Maintains respectful, professional, and courteous relationships with EMS Director, EMS Medical Director, employees of the EMS department, and employees of CCH.
• Develops and maintains respectful, professional, and courteous relationships with community leaders and members, other healthcare facilities and their employees, and employees of the law enforcement, fire service, and mine rescue communities.
• Completes all mandatory training required by CCH.
• Maintains clinical competencies and knowledge of professional standards related to protocols, clinical practice, skill proficiency, staffing, and continuing education.
• Maintains valid state issued driver’s license. Maintains driving record standards required by the insurance provider of CCH. Operates vehicles in a safe and prudent manner in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws as well as CCH and EMS policy.
• Maintains operational readiness, professional appearance, and safety of staff, ambulances, equipment, and facilities.
• Fills various roles within the ICS system on emergency scenes.
• When requested during surges in patient volumes, assist with medical treatment of patients in other departments of CCH under the direction of the MD and RN within their scope of practice as defined by the State of Wyoming.
• Participates in shift coverage, departmental rounding, on committees, and in training and education to ensure successful operation of the EMS department and CCH.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure a safe and productive work environment is always maintained.
• Responsible for adhering to and enforcing all organizational and department policies and procedures.
• Initiates and participates in disciplinary procedures as appropriate.
• Prepares informational, technical, investigative, and other related reports.
• Assist in the development and justification of capital, operational, and staffing budgets.
• Applies critical thinking to problem identification and resolution related to personnel, compliance, and other EMS department issues.
• Demonstrates fiscal responsibility and participates in cost containment and economical utilization of supplies and equipment.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

• Education, Training, Experience:
• Education: High School graduate or GED equivalent and completion of accredited paramedic education program. An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in related field is required within five years of hire.
• Licensure: Wyoming Office of EMS issued paramedic license; National Registry preferred.
• Certifications required: See Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification Policy and Certifications/Education Requirements Policy. Maintain current American Heart Association ACLS, and PALS, and NRP certifications. PHTLS/BTLS, AMLS, PEPP course certifications preferred unless required by State of WY OEMS for renewal of paramedic license. Maintains current Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator. Emergency Vehicle Operations Course – Ambulance certification within 1 year of employment.
• Experience: Minimum of 3 years working as a paramedic for a licensed EMS agency is required. Five or more years of experience is preferred along with experience in a supervisory position and current employment with CCH-EMS.

• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• The ability to maintain continuing education requirements and all certifications and licenses as required (e.g. ACLS, PALS, CPI, CPR) to maintain professional license.
  • Licensed professionals must strictly adhere to the ethical code of their respective discipline.
• Thorough knowledge of emergency medical equipment, vehicles, and communication devices and their proper usage.
• Thorough knowledge of department policies, procedures, and continuous quality improvement objectives.
• Ability and willingness to adhere to applicable laws, policies, procedures, and protocols governing the emergency medical services system.
• Knowledge of modern supervisory methods and practices that promote a safe and productive work environment along with respectful, professional, and courteous employee relationships.
• Considerable knowledge of the geography of the local area.
• Considerable knowledge of the operation and mechanical aspects of EMS vehicles and the ability to operate them safely.
• Ability to supervise/ manage in a positive and professional manner including work ethic, attitude, professional standards, interpersonal interactions, and mutual respect.
• Ability to develop and support teamwork.
• Ability to learn, understand and apply additional training and education.
• Must be able to communicate effectively and coherently with members of the public, other emergency response agencies, coworkers and other healthcare employees, and patients and family members face to face and using electronic communication devices.
• Ability to use critical thinking to perform essential technical job-related procedures.
• Ability to drive an ambulance safely and defensively.
• Ability to communicate needs and desires appropriately with coworkers and supervisors.

• Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skill in the following age groups:

  • Adolescent (12-18)
  • Adult (19-64)
  • Geriatric (Age 65 and older)
• Possesses thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office products, the WATRS/ EMS Field Bridge/OWLS software programs, and numerous other software products used by CCH and the ability to chart, document, and perform various functions within each.
