Summary Job Description: Shop Electrician Apprentice: The purpose of this job is to learn the skills necessary to inspect, maintain, repair, and rebuild all electrical components of NICTD’s railroad passenger cars. Electrician apprentices are expected to be comfortable working with industrial sized traction motors, blowers, high voltage, computer based diagnostics, electronics, and HVAC systems. Candidates must have skills using the tools of the electrician trade including, but not limited to, voltage and amp meters, high pot testers, meggers, frequency counters, DC power supplies, cranes, and other common electrical hand tools. Must be able to lift items weighing up to thirty pounds. The work is often on ladders and in close quarters; balance is essential. The location is primarily in Michigan City, Indiana. Successful candidates should expect to work varying hours of their apprenticeship on day shift, afternoon shift, night shift, weekends, some holidays, and relief assignments. Once the apprenticeship is completed, assignments are based on seniority.
Hours, Wages & Benefits: The normal work week is forty (40) hours; though there may be times when overtime is required. The straight time starting hourly wage rate is between $20.22 and $26.43 depending on the candidate’s education and skills. Benefits include paid vacations, paid holidays, paid personal days, medical insurance, dental insurance, term life insurance, vision insurance, no-cost PPE, and tuition reimbursement. An excellent defined-benefit style pension is provided through the Railroad Retirement Board.
Minimum Educational & Age Requirements: High school diploma or GED; at least eighteen (18) years of age. One or more years of practical comparable electrical experience or at least twelve (12) credit hours of trade school or college level study in the electrical field, HVAC systems, or heavy industrial maintenance. Veterans with demonstrated military training or assignments in an industrial maintenance or electrical specialty may substitute their military training and experience for civilian trade school degree or civilian experience.
Other Requirements:
(1) Must be in good physical health to fulfill the attached essential functions of the assignment, with or without reasonable accommodations.
(2) Must be able to read, write, and communicate clearly and fluently so as to understand and follow the General Code of Operating Rules, communicate essential operational and safety information, and pass periodic rule/safety/technical examinations.
(3) Mechanical aptitude, good physical strength and endurance, good interpersonal skills when interacting with supervisors and fellow employees.
(4) Flexible about unexpected changes in work assignments or priorities.
(5) Ability to work in Michigan City, Gary, or Chicago based on seniority and needs of the service. For work in Chicago, employees have a pass to use NICTD trains. However, the time in travel to and from the assignment is not paid.
(6) Reliable transportation to and from Michigan City, Indiana, or the station where they board NICTD trains for work in Michigan Gary or Chicago.
(7) Must be able to pass drug test, physical examination, and satisfactory background check as a condition subsequent to any offer of employment.
Environmental Conditions: Work is primarily indoors though subject to temperature extremes throughout the day or night. Training will be conducted during day shift primarily (7 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Some assignments may require outdoor work. Most positions are on the evening (3 p.m. – 11 p.m.). Work is done on significantly uneven surfaces and may require work on or near snow or ice during winter. Levels of activity vary from moderate to intense. Stressful situations may occur. Exposure to heat, humidity, and cold is common.
Experience Relevant To Position (preferred but not required to apply): Heavy electrical work on own or as part of a crew, experience in factory or fleet maintenance, heavy equipment operation, railroad mechanical or operating experience, successful work with varying shifts or night shifts, prior licensing for positions in the truck, airline, or rail industry, outdoor or varying shifts in military service.
