About the Job
The City of Topeka has multiple vacancies for Signs & Markings Specialists. These positions will be filled as a I or II, depending on qualifications.
Using a variety of equipment including aerial bucket trucks and hydraulic post driver, this position installs and maintains City owned street and roadway signage, ensuring compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards. This includes fabricating signs using a computer-aided sign making system and operating a bed-mounted and walk-behind street striping machine and paint sprayer for the installation/painting of street, crosswalk and other pavement markings.
This position requires heavy lifting, pulling, pushing, and standing long periods of time to perform the required job duties. Will require the ability to work a night shift during the crosswalk painting season and may be required to participate/assist in emergency snow removal operations.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license and must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka's insurance carrier.
- Equipment Operator I - Experience with equipment used in the construction trades preferred. One (1) year experience installing traffic signs, roadway markings and directly related experience preferred. IMSA Work Zone Traffic Control Safety Certification and forklift safety certification required within one (1) year of hire date.
- Equipment Operator II – Must have IMSA Work Zone Traffic Control Safety certification and forklift safety certification at the time or hire and must have IMSA Level I Signs and Markings Specialist Certification within six months of hire. Two (2) years direct experience installing traffic signs and roadway markings. Experience with equipment used in the construction trades
Entry rate of pay: $15.59 - $17.54 per hour, DOQ
