OVERVIEW:
THIS POSITION IS SEASONAL
Under direction of the Public Works and Operations Director, operates a snowplow in plowing and cleaning County streets and roads. This position is on-call and will respond to snow removal operations and emergency situations on a 24-hour on-call basis. You must be capable of lifting 50 lbs.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operates specialized heavy equipment such snow plows and sanders in plowing and cleaning snow off County streets and roads.
Hauls snow off County roads using dump truck, plow, and attached sander; responds to snow removal operations and emergency situations on a 24 hour on-call basis.
May perform safety checks and minor repairs to various heavy equipment.
Performs duties with due regard for personal safety, that of other employees and the public.
ABOUT YOU:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent; sufficient education and training to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform the essential and other related duties.
Experience: One (1) to two (2) years of experience in operating and maintain medium to heavy equipment.
OR An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
Knowledge: Knowledge of various light to heavy equipment; hazards and safety precautions related to construction equipment and operations; traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations; construction methods and procedures typical to county road systems; equipment parts and preventative maintenance for the same. Knowledge of hazardous chemical handling procedures; occupational hazards related to mechanical repairs; procedures and techniques used in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of equipment and vehicles. Knowledge of road construction and maintenance; emergency operations related to County roads; advanced skill in operation of all heavy equipment including highly specialized heavy equipment. Knowledge of standard office and record keeping practices and skill in operating standard office equipment. Knowledge of body fluid and bio-hazard cleanup procedures.
Skills: Journey level skill in operation of medium and heavy equipment. Skill in operating a forklift, other motorized equipment and various hand, pneumatic, and power tools.
Abilities: Ability to operate simple to complex heavy equipment in various conditions; perform manual tasks for sustained periods of time; perform minor equipment maintenance and repair; follow written and verbal instructions; read and understand prints and plans. Ability to research methods, techniques, and/or sources of information; exercise initiative, discretion, and judgment in making decisions. Ability to make a decision or solve a problem by using logic to identify key facts, explore alternatives, and propose quality solutions. Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work activities; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; understand and follow clear work instructions; distill relevant and useful elements from vast amounts of information. Read, interpret and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and/or procedures; abide by laws governing access to public and private records (Government Records Access and Management Act). Ability to take initiative in addressing problems in day to day operations. Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive records and information. Ability to promote a positive attitude, and motivate peers to work as a team.
YOUR SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess, or obtain within sixty (60) days of hire date, a valid Utah State Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- Two (2) years of experience in operating and maintaining medium to heavy equipment preferred
- Two (2) to three (3) years of experience in the operation of tandem axle dump trucks
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
- Must be able to pass a DOT drug screen
- Ability to be on-call as needed
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKENVIRONMENT:
The physical demands of this position and work environment characteristics described are representative of those that must be met or will be encountered by an employee while successfully performing the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally lifts, carries, pushes, pulls, or otherwise moves objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
Work is performed in environmentally controlled and partially environmentally controlled buildings and work is regularly performed for sustained periods outdoors and occasionally in hot, cold, or inclement weather; work is regularly performed in noisy places; exposes incumbent to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, or machinery; requires use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.; and work exposes incumbent to unknown, dangerous, and/or life-threatening conditions.
Work exposes incumbent to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and noise; exposes the incumbent to hazardous chemicals, and to hazards in the cleanup of body fluids and other biological hazards.
Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate tools, computers and various pieces of office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
