Saildrone works with governments, civil agencies, foundations, universities, and private companies around the globe to drive better information about our oceans and seas—from sailing into the eye of a category 4 hurricane to obtain new data about how storms intensify, collecting new CO2 data in hard-to-reach areas, and counting fish biomass to inform sustainable fishery management, to mapping the ocean floor and reducing illegal fishing and drug trafficking. The Role

The Platform team manages the foundational systems that keep our fleet running and enable our customer deliverables. The team is responsible for customer-facing APIs, authentication and authorization systems, automated drone configuration, fleet monitoring systems and much more! With our wide swath of ownership, this team is critical to the growth of our company, meaning your impact will be immediately felt.

We’re looking to hire an engineer with experience building scalable systems to assist with our growing technical and business needs. While this role is primarily focused on backend services, knowledge of or experience with modern frontend web development is a huge plus. Be ready to work with REST APIs, microservices, web apps, OAuth, cloud computing, hardware, linux, networking and more!

Required Skills and Experience

• 3-5 years of professional software development experience
• BA/BS in related field or equivalent experience
• Fluency in Python and/or JavaScript (ideally TypeScript).
• Experience developing REST APIs
• Hands-on experience with relational databases
• Familiarity with cloud service providers
• Comfortable with modern software development tools and best-practices (e.g. Agile, Git, code review)
• Experience writing comprehensive unit and integration tests
  
  

Desired Skills and Experience

• AWS experience
• Experience with microservice or service-oriented architectures
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures
• Docker / Kubernetes experience
• Familiarity with frameworks like Hapi/Express, Django, and FastAPI.
• Experience working with geospatial and/or time series data
• Exposure to gRPC
  
  

Physical Requirements

• Work is performed on a computer and requires ability to operate a keyboard and other peripheral devices.
  
  

Location: This is a hybrid position in Alameda, CA. Our waterfront office offers beautiful views of San Francisco Bay in always sunny Alameda. Even our walls have good karma, our offices mix software development with a hardware production line in the former airplane hangar used to film 'The Matrix'.
