Southern Program Coordinator - Young Invincibles

Young Invincibles (“YI”) is a non-profit, non-partisan advocacy organization, with 45 employees and an annual budget of $7.0mm, working to expand economic opportunity for young people ages 18 to 34 and to amplify their voices in the national political conversation and policy arena. Founded by and for young adults in the summer of 2009 during the debate over health care reform, YI has quickly grown into a leading voice for young people on the issues of health care, higher education, employment and civic engagement. The organization has achieved major successes in areas ranging from the regulation of college health plans to Pell grants, and has successfully engaged hundreds of thousands of young adults online through a network of over 100 partner organizations. Our regional offices (California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, and Texas) have increased grant aid for low-income college students, expanded funding for community colleges, and ensured undocumented students can access in-state tuition

Position Description: 

The Program Coordinator (“Coordinator”) will support young adult engagement projects within the Southern Texas office.YI pushes for policy change across our issue areas through policy advocacy, consumer education, youth engagement, and strategic communications. The Coordinator will work across all issue areas and functions to support the office’s programs and activities following YI’s mission and strategic direction. The position will support the design, planning, and implementation of activities and advocacy tactics to achieve programmatic goals and outcomes.

The ideal candidate will help oversee state-focused operations for YI and help develop the strategy for YI’s state- and local-level youth engagement. Programmatically, this will include (but is not limited to) coordinating youth roundtables around the state with partner organizations, young adults, and policymakers to identify solutions for the economic challenges facing young adults, local actions, from town hall events to press conferences, designed to increase attention for youth issues, and listening sessions for policy research. This position will be responsible for on-the-ground base-building, helping grow our volunteer base and campus and non-campus presence.  The position will also build relationships and create new partnerships with other non-profit organizations to build power, coordinate organization activities, and grow our volunteer base. The position will be responsible for helping to build the state-level volunteer network and create relationships at colleges, particularly MSIs and community colleges throughout the state.

You’re a great fit if you have community organizing, research, policy, constituent engagement, and training expertise and can translate complex policy information into consumer-friendly plain language. This position will work collaboratively with YI teams and external partners to advance integrated issue campaigns, maximize outcomes, and strengthen an infrastructure conducive to greater participation of young adults in the political process. 

Position reports to: Southern Regional Director

Hourly Rate: $22.60

Key Competencies Duties:

• Overseeing logistics and planning details of events  and tactics within Texas.
• Facilitate partnerships and coalitions, external partners, and young adult leaders to implement YI’s Affordable Care Act Open Enrollment strategy.
• Presenting and facilitating trainings and workshops, including but not limited to YI’s health insurance literacy (HIL) training, student debt repayment training, etc. 
• Recruiting participation and turnout for events and training.
• Managing follow-up and continued relationships with partners and YI’s volunteer base.
• Communicating and synthesizing complex material into a youth-friendly format.
• Administrative duties such as tracking and importing data, completing debrief reports, and follow-up surveys with young adults. 
• Elevate young adult voices through story collection, education, and training.
• Assist with policy research, including but not limited to monitoring and analyzing state and local legislation that impacts economic opportunities for young adults, facilitating focus groups and participatory action research 
• Build relationships with colleges and universities, partner organizations, young adult leaders, and other stakeholders.
• Represent Young Invincibles in the media, at hearings, with key alliances, coalitions, and at strategic conferences and gatherings  across the state.
• Staying up to date on current events and policy decisions that affect campaign strategy.
• Implement digital outreach and consumer information projects designed to serve students and young adults.

Qualifications:

• 1 year of community outreach or youth organizing experience.
• Ability to convene and lead diverse partners toward a common goal.
• Willingness to travel to Houston, Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, and East Texas as needed.
• Experience in facilitating presentations, group discussions, and training.
• Strong facilitation skills - creative, energetic, and possessing a great attitude.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment. 
• Capacity to design effective training materials. 
• Excellent internal and external communication skills.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
