About the Job
As a Space Propulsion Systems Engineer, you will support Busek’s development of in-space propulsion technologies. You will get to develop and maintain the specifications required by our customers that go into building Busek’s electric propulsion products. To be successful in this role you will have experience in systems engineering and have worked closely with requirements on complex technical products. You will have a background in managing complex programs where you will interpret and decompose requirements and disseminate information on the product to other engineering groups.

Busek researches, develops, and produces technologies for challenging space missions for small spacecraft in low-earth orbit, large geostationary satellites, and CubeSats and probes going to the moon and beyond. Our talented staff have collective expertise spanning in-space propulsion, space-borne sensors, materials science, manufacturing, and high-fidelity electronic design. Busek’s accomplishments include: the first US Hall Effect Thruster in space, the first Micro-PPT Thrusters, and the first flight Electrospray Thrusters. Our present efforts span high-volume and low-volume production of high-reliability in-space propulsion components and systems as well as development of novel processes and technologies.

Day to day activities:
- Ensure that Requirement management, Interface management, Technical risk management, Configuration management and Technical data management goals are all met.
- Perform system analysis and system engineering oversight while working with internal and external subject matter experts.
- Lead a comprehensive flight project requirements development and verification/validation program, establish technical interfaces, and develop recommendations for addressing technical issues and project risks and their associated mitigation plans.
- Interact with team leaders and customer personnel on technical matters often requiring. coordinated activity across Busek products and technical disciplines including big picture views.
- Perform comprehensive trades on product capability/performance, cost, and schedule.
- Interface with technical customers as required.
- Document and report progress in status reports and technical reviews.
- Collect and analyze data and customer requests to assess system operations.
Desired skills:
- Knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical and Software Engineering fundamental principles.
- Strong documentation skills and participation in ongoing development efforts and design reviews.
- Ability to understand customer technical requirements and disseminate information to a broad group of technical team members.
- Ability to lead a comprehensive flight project requirements development and verification/validation program, establish technical interfaces and to develop recommendations for addressing technical issues and project risks and associated mitigation plans.
- Experience generating and maintaining systems engineering artifacts: hardware or software design requirements, interface control documents, failure modes and effects analysis, fault tree analysis, reliability analysis, etc.
- Familiarity with the basic sub-systems comprising a satellite electric propulsion system, including tradeoffs between simplicity, reliability, and performance.
- Familiarity with mechanical, thermal, dynamic, and other environmental factors impacting satellite operation and test.
- Familiarity with interdependencies between propulsion systems and other high-level satellite systems (e.g. power, attitude control, flight dynamics).
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
