We have an exciting opportunity for a Space Suit Hardware Project Engineer to join our JETS II contract team at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX.
If selected you will:
- Support Johnson Space Center's activities on the Advanced Suit Team
- Work with and be trained by senior spacesuit team members in the areas of design, fabrication, assembly, testing and safety Testing will include both Human in the Loop (HITL) and non-HITL configurations of spacesuit assemblies
- Prepare and complete procedures for spacesuit maintenance, repairs, testing, and fabrication
- Identify and troubleshoot anomalies and perform corrective actions
- Follow and implement safety policies, rules, and procedures to maintain a safe working environment for personnel and equipment
- Support mishap and close call investigations, serve as the suit team rep to the investigation team, address actions and implement changes resulting from safety investigations
- Develop hazard analyses, including identification of safety risks and implementation of hazard controls and verifications
- Provide coordination and support of multiple suit configurations at various NASA test facilities, such as in one-g, reduced gravity, Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL), and the Active Response Gravity Offload System (ARGOS)
- Design and build unique tests fixtures and methods for various spacesuit test programs
- Maintain a high level of technical excellence for all tasks to ensure the highest quality of technical products including test setups, test operations, development setups, development operations, documentation generation, execution, and closeout
- Perform engineering design evaluations
- Produce engineering drawings conforming to applicable standards
- Perform other duties required
Qualifications:

- Typically requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in engineering and normally possess 5 - 10 years of related experience. License and certification may be required
- Experience using solid modeling CAD software
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Must have a working knowledge of machine shop processes and familiarization with the structural and thermal analysis process in the development of hardware
- Must have experience with pressure systems​
Preferred Qualifications:
- BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related
- Experience designing and testing hardware
- Knowledgeable in spacesuit systems
- Ability to produce drawings, perform dimensional fit tolerance analysis, and support design with standard hand calculations for fit, function, and structural strength.
- 2 years of experience using solid modeling CAD software​
