Summary: Spoken healthcare language interpreters act as a communication and cultural liaisons between Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients, companions, authorized decision makers, and their healthcare team by providing meaningful language services and supporting effective communication.
Monday – Friday 8am – 4:30pm

Responsibilities/Job Description:
- Interprets accurately and completely, conveying the content and spirit of the original message, taking into consideration the cultural context in a way that is responsive to the demands of the situation (in person, video, or telephone).
- Makes appropriate introductions and explains scope of practice that is responsive to the demands of the situation
- Selects appropriate mode of interpreting (consecutive, simultaneous or sight translation).
- Orally renders sight translation of limited written documents/ forms/information as needed and when applicable.
- Manages room/set-up and flow of communication to promote direct communication between all parties.
- Facilitates communication across cultural differences and alerts all parties to any significant cultural or linguistic disparities
- Maintains confidentiality and professional boundaries of the interpreter role, and refrains from personal involvement.
- Adheres to NCIHC Code of Ethics & Standards of Practice.
- Demonstrates honest & ethical conduct according to Guiding Principles.
- Diffuses conflict between parties by remaining calm and impartial.
- Manages daily workflow through proficiency with Epic and Microsoft Outlook
- Documents services in EPIC
- Communicates with scheduling office and members of Administrative Team.
- Supports patients and families with communication access and contributes to overall experience through support of organizational policy, behaviors and utilization of available resources.
- Provides limited support for (written) translations as requested and as deemed appropriate by Language Services department standards.
Adaptability
- Travels to and provides interpreting services in multiple settings as needed/requested.
- Demonstrates personal flexibility to meet staffing and patient communication needs.
- Manages and communicates unanticipated changes throughout the day.
- Demonstrates ability to provide language services with a variety of clinical populations.
- Completes assigned duties prior to transition to subsequent setting and/or establishes handoff for continuity of care.
- Adaptable in responding to demands of multiple processes/settings.

- Fosters a culture of improvement, efficiency and innovative thinking.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required
Education
- Minimum of 40 hours of formal training or college level courses in healthcare interpreting
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in healthcare interpreting
- Must have reliable transportation to perform work at various locations.
License/Certification/Registration
- Minnesota Department of Health’s Spoken language interpreter roster
Preferred
Education
- Associate degree or higher in interpreting or related fields.
Experience
- 5+ years of experience in healthcare interpreting
License/Certification/Registration
- National Certification for Healthcare Interpreters
- Certificate of interpreting from an accredited post-secondary institution
Additional Requirements (must be obtained or completed within a period of time):
- Multilingual interpreters may be asked to provide services on demand by the populations served across the system.
- Approved language testing will be required for these additional languages.
