Our Special Deputies:
- Enforce Federal and State Laws, County Ordinances, including the Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws.
- Perform police patrol tours of duty as required to include the protection of persons and property, crime prevention and the provision of first aid.
- Conduct accident and complaint investigations as assigned.
- Identify, collect and preserve evidence.
- Operate and drive department vehicles as required.
- Provide traffic control at special or public events.
- Supervise conduct of persons at public events.
- Assist in the transportation of prisoners.
- Attend court proceedings as necessary.
- Keep records and complete thorough and concise reports.
- Attend all schools, meetings and seminars as required and successfully complete all established testing or performance standards.
- Comply with all department rules, standard operating policies and procedures, directives and special orders.
- Attend regular training sessions/meetings as required.
- Successfully complete all state mandated in-service and re-certification training and department schools, seminars and other training as required.
- Perform all other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Citizen of the United States.
- Attained the age of 21 by final application date.
- Possess a valid unrestricted Ohio Driver's License (exception for vision correctable to 20/20).
- Shall not have been convicted of a criminal offense equivalent to a felony or serious misdemeanor under Ohio Law.
- Must not have been convicted of a Domestic Abuse crime.
- Successfully pass all entrance testing and application requirements.
- Successfully pass any required physical, medical or psychological exams and background investigation.
- Successfully pass pre-employment drug and polygraph testing, if required.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Maintain good physical condition.
- Shall provide the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department with a minimum of eight (8) hours of volunteer work time per month as a Special Deputy. The (8) hours may consist of a variety of Law Enforcement related functions and will be approved and scheduled through the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.
- Shall provide all leather goods and body armor required for the position and which meet department policy guidelines.
- Must have a current State of Ohio Basic Peace Officer Certification.
Essential Knowledge and Abilities
- Ability to learn and effectively apply the use of police equipment, principles, methods, practices and techniques.
- Ability to learn and effectively apply emergency first aid practices and procedures.
- Ability to safely and skillfully operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to gather information and produce clear, concise and thorough records and reports.
- Ability to remain calm and objective under stress and to exercise sound judgment under stress.
- Ability to interpret and apply department policy and procedure to assigned responsibilities and tasks.
- Ability to accept and follow orders.
