DESCRIPTION: The primary role of the Special Education Resource Teacher is to maximize each student’s potential. This embraces all facets of the student’s environment; his home, family, school and community. Combined with information from other disciplines, the special education teacher at the secondary level attempts to provide a holistic approach to aiding each student in their development of becoming a functional member of society as they transition into the adult world.

QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Knowledge of special education process. 2. Valid Teaching Certificate with Special Education endorsement. 3. Conduct diagnostic/functional assessments as a member of a team. 4. Take a leadership role as case manager as designated by the team. 5. Capable of prescribing methods and/or strategies to facilitate success pursuant to individual ability. 6. Gather and analyze data. 7. Evaluate progress through student achievement and mastery of behavioral objectives pursuant to IEP. 8. Communicate effectively with staff, students, parents and agencies. 9. Work closely with other teaching staff. 10. Work with individual students or small groups and/or give direct instruction to individuals or groups. 11. Demonstrate community awareness and knowledge of various support agencies. 12. Promote team building. 13. Demonstrate student advocacy.

Reports to: Principal
Supervises: No direct reports.
RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Case manager/teacher leader/facilitator. 2. Administer functional assessments. 3. Keep timelines and maintain records in an organized manner. 4. Assist regular education in adapting curriculum to meet student needs. 5. Act as a liaison between agencies and school. 6. Plan/develop/administer functional curriculum with general education staff. 7. Comply with monitoring standards. 8. Identify jobs/analyze jobs/job coach and arrange for on-the-job training in the community. 9. Facilitate student development of Career Pathways Portfolio. 10. Supervise instructional assistant(s). 11. Other duties deemed necessary and appropriate by the supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Working area will be in a regular education classroom. Provide specially designed instruction to students. Maintain inventory and equipment assigned to classroom. Provide programming within budgetary constraints. Teaching assignment will be determined on an annual basis by the building principal.

While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to sit, lift, carry, move about, hear and speak. Teacher may be required to perform extensive work at a computer display terminal.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, or consistent with the subject being taught, but can be abnormally loud on occasion.
While performing the duties of this job, the teacher may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. The teacher may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students.
The teacher may be required to travel in school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
