Summary:
Performs a wide variety of duties relating to the special educational needs of assigned patients during hospitalization. Provides services to children and adolescents.
Responsibilities:
- Assesses the educational needs of patients.
- Contacts the previous educational setting (providing an adequate release is available) and/or reviews all available written records.
- Assesses supervises or approves the educational needs of the patient before the Diagnostic Conference date.
- Prepares assessment in adherence to established departmental format.
- Prepares daily lesson plans consistent with evaluations and /or IEP�s and overall hospital treatment plan.
- Generates lesson plans no later than the second day of educational programming.
- Writes lesson plans to reflect all major areas of instruction appropriate to the academic level of each patient.
- Provides lesson plans in sufficient details to allow a substitute to implement these plans.
- Makes lesson plan available in a conspicuous place on the teacher�s desk.
- Reviews and updates lesson plans weekly.
- Is responsible for maintaining a classroom environment conducive to learning.
- Provides each child with academic assignments and required materials at the beginning of the school day.
- Clearly defines classroom rules and schedules through verbal or written instruction.
- Provides each child with individualized instructional help as indicated.
- Is dependable punctual and professional.
- Reports to work on time prepared for daily work assignments.
- Plans in advance for special days off; does not abuse time.
- Gives adequate notice for all scheduled leave time.
- Gives adequate notice to supervisory personnel when calling in sick or late according to hospital and departmental policy and procedures.
- Conducts themselves in dress and behavior in a professional manner.
- As required is responsible for IEP preparation and presentation.
- Is responsible for completing an IEP prior to the date of the IEP conference. The IEP form will be completed according to approved departmental format and will be of high professional quality. Any exceptions must be approved by Senior Teacher.
- Reports on child�s academic progress through written or verbal communication.
- Is able to state the child�s grade level and or functional level in all academic subjects.
- Is able to state the child�s progress in behavioral terms.
- Identifies those factors which impede academic progress.
- States specific strategies employed to promote progress.
- Is responsible for assisting in the discharge process for all assigned patients.
- Ensures that child�s local school system has been informed regarding date of discharge and academic recommendations.
- Submits a discharge summary according to departmental format.
- Demonstrates the ability to function as an effective member of the interdisciplinary team.
- Maintains a positive working relationship with team members.
- Consults with other clinical staff regarding patients.
- Uses expertise of team members in planning and implementing educational and behavioral programs when appropriate.
- Assists other team members in interpreting evaluation of findings.
- s an active member of the Special Clinical Services Department.
- Participates actively in departmental staff meetings.
- Attends at least 80% of department meetings.
- Accepts and performs delegated responsibilities on departmental committees.
- Suggests improvements in department functions as it relates to the educational services hospital-wide.
- Shares expertise and provides support to other educational staff members
- Participates actively in Total Quality Management.
- Performs a variety of other related duties requested by the department or the hospital and complies with all local state and federal laws and regulations.
- Observes all hospital and departmental policies rules and regulations.
- Bachelor�s degree in special education; certification from the Rhode Island Department of Education (to include levels of handicapped certification appropriate to the hospital�s population).
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
