About the Job
The Specialty Unit Nurse Resident, under the supervision of the program manager/unit manager and in collaboration with his/her preceptor, will be responsible for the provision of nursing care to assigned patients in accordance with MyMichigan Health policy and the state of MI. Administers and monitors patient response to therapeutic interventions. The Specialty Unit Nurse Resident demonstrates knowledge and application of the nursing process as it relates to patients and families; is accountable for professional nursing practice; collaborates with health care team members, patients and their families in the provision of care. Delegates to and provides direct supervision to other health care team members as appropriate in the implementation of the plan of care. Acts as an advocate for patients and their families and practices within accepted ethical and legal parameters of nursing. Adheres to system and department compliance policies, and any and all applicable laws and regulations. Performs other duties as assigned. This newly licensed RN will participate in the Graduate Nurse Residency Program activities that have been tailored to successfully transition new RNs into independent practice by the conclusion of the program. The Specialty Unit Nurse Resident will be supported by the Organization Development Manager, Clinical Education Specialist and unit-based preceptors trained to guide your development and develop confidence, critical thinking and expertise in the professional role of an RN. The Organization Development Manager in collaboration with the unit manager is responsible for ensuring that the RN resident consistently meets the necessary performance expectations associated with the residency curriculum to ensure successful completion of the residency program and transition into a professional nurse position.
Responsibilities:The Nurse Resident, while providing direct patient care, functions under the direct supervision, direction and delegation of the RN preceptor.
(30%)* Fulfillment of Nurse Residency Program (NRP) expectations: Fulfills the expectations of the program as listed, including, but not limited to below:
Attends required nurse residency sessions
1:1 meetings with clinical nurse specialist, unit manager, and preceptor
Accurately completes required documentation for program
Attends required pathway classes as applicable
Completes required e-learnings as applicable
(20%)* Patient care: Provides nursing care under the direction of the RN preceptor using the Nursing Process.
Prioritizes/organizes delegated patient care assignments
Accountable for all patient care assignments and documentation of all interventions
Performs technical nursing skills as outlined in standards and procedures manual and as described by unit-specific competencies
Engages in reinforcement of patient/family teaching as delegated by the RN preceptor
Encouraged to be proactive in seeking learning opportunities
Completes orientation
Care planning for the shift with the RN preceptor
(20%)* Communications:
Identifies and communicates changes in the patient’s condition to the RN mentor.
Demonstrates a positive personal approach and interaction with others
(15%)* Unit responsibilities:
Maintains clean, safe patient care area
Handles equipment appropriately; returns equipment to proper place after its use and asks questions about its use when necessary
Considers cost in using supplies for patient care
Assists with completing patient census correctly
(15%) Personal responsibilities:
Demonstrates ability to give care cooperatively with other patient care team members
Actively participates in quality management and continuing education; updates and maintains knowledge, skills, and competencies related to the area of practice and age(s) of patient population. Presents a clean and neat appearance according to the organizational dress code.

Communicativeness- Participates in care conferences as assigned; shares information and reports significant changes and/or abnormal findings to appropriate team members; documents in an accurate, clear, and concise way and includes pertinent clinical data.
Relationship Building- Develops and maintains good working rapport with interdisciplinary personnel to meet the needs of each patient and family; strives to make each patient experience excellent.
Learning Agility- Participates in regulatory surveys; participates in performance improvement activities; demonstrates understanding of clinical pathways and utilizes appropriately; remains current of new developments by reading professional journals, and attending seminars.
Problem Solving & Decision Making- Demonstrates a general ability to manage assignments and perform routine duties on the unit; implements clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures; remains calm and efficient when working in stressful situations; demonstrates understanding of role in emergency preparedness procedure; provides for the age specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures as evidenced by observation, documentation and peer feedback in the following:
· Adolescent over 16 years of age
· Adult 18 to 64 years of age
· Later adult 65 years and older
Organizing and Planning- Demonstrates the ability to organize and prioritize the needs of groups of patients or an individual patient.
Participation in the Nurse Residency Program is an agreement of employment with MyMichigan Health for two years post Nurse Residency Program completion.
Certifications and Licensures:BLS - Basic Life Support
Required Equivalent Experience - Within 3 months of hire or transfer
Equivalent Experience - State of MI RN Licensure required within 3 months of
hire or have less than 12 months of licensure
Education:
Associates Degree in nursing required
Bachelor's degree preferred
Minimum GPA requirement of 3.25
