Job Summary: The Speech and Language Pathologist evaluates, plans, and administers comprehensive speech therapy modalities/regimens as prescribed by a physician to patients with speech, voice, language, cognitive-communicative, and oral-pharyngeal swallowing disorders in their place of residence for the purpose of improving and/or restoring speech and/or swallowing functions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Duties include but are not limited to:
- Provide aural rehabilitation for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Provide augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems for individuals with severe expressive and/or language comprehension disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder or progressive neurological disorders.
- Work with people who don't have speech, language, or swallowing disorders, but want to learn how to communicate more effectively (e.g., work on accent modification or other forms of communication enhancement).
- Work with people who have difficulty producing speech sounds correctly or fluently
Qualifications:
- Experience working with people who have disorders that occur when a person has trouble understanding others (receptive language), or sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings (expressive language). Language disorders may be spoken or written and may involve the form (phonology, morphology, syntax), content (semantics), and/or use (pragmatics) of language in functional and socially appropriate ways.
- Ability to work with people who have Cognitive-communication disorders include problems organizing thoughts, paying attention, remembering, planning, and/or problem-solving. These disorders usually happen as a result of a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or dementia, although they can be congenital.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to use personal computer and software to develop spreadsheets and databases and do word processing
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or higher
- 3-5years experience, preferably in an education environment
Working Conditions:
- Hearing and speaking to conduct group training, exchange information in person electronically and over the telephone
- Ability to read printed material and computer screens. Ability to understand speech at normal levels
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment
- Kneeling, bending at the waist, and reaching overhead above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies.
- Ability to climb stairs, bend, reach, walk, sit and stand for extended periods of time. Ability to lift and carry 10 pounds.
