Speech Therapist
The Speech Therapist duties include planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating and directing the speech therapy services, as well as its programs and activities, in accordance with the current rules, regulations, guidelines and standards of practice for a skilled care facility. To confer with physicians and other practitioners to obtain additional resident information. To monitor and suggest revisions in treatment programs / plans as indicated. To integrate other therapy treatments and other aspects of the resident’s healthcare to develop an inclusive plan of care. To meet with administration including the administrator, medical director and director of nursing in planning and developing continued therapy services for the facility.
Speech Therapist Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review physician’s referral, resident’s condition and medical record to determine resident’s qualification for therapy and therapy treatment required if any
- Interview residents to evaluate daily living skills and capacities to determine extent of abilities, limitations and personal goals
- Administer speech / language evaluations, tests, or examinations to residents to collect information on type of impairments’, using written and oral tests and special instruments
- Develop and implement speech / language treatment plans for problems such as stuttering, delayed speech, swallowing disorders and inappropriate pitch or harsh voice problems
- Explain speech therapy policies, procedures and programs to personnel, residents and family members as needed
- Educate and train residents and family members concerning prescribed programs and activities
- Educate and provide guidance and training for new or less experienced personnel Participate in development and implementation of resident assessments, MDS and care plans including initial, annual and quarterly or as needed
- Provide necessary materials and equipment for residents to preform required therapy
- Recommend modifications and changes in treatment as indicated
- Abides by the resident’s participation in treatment decision
- Participates in and contributes to interdisciplinary care conferences
- Ensure the therapy area is maintained in a safe and clean manner
- Administer speech/language evaluations, tests, or examinations to residents to collect information on the type of impairments, using written and oral rests and special instruments
- Develop and implement speech/language treatment plans for problems such as stuttering, delayed peach, swallowing disorders and inappropriate pitch or harsh voice problems
- Other duties as assigned
Speech Therapist Education and Experience Requirements:
- Degree in speech therapy from an accredited program
- Licensed to practice speech therapy in operating state
- Previous experience in long-term care facility is preferred
- Strong communication and multi-tasking skills
- Compassionate and empathetic personality
Speech Therapist Physical Demands:
- Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday
- Must be able to push, pull move and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet
- May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
