Overview:The Sports Manager plays a dual role in providing leadership for after-school groups and supporting the basketball program. This role involves planning and facilitating educational, recreational, and developmental activities for youth, as well as assisting the basketball coach with practice drills, tournament organization, and overall sports program management. The Group Leader/Sports Manager will work closely with the Group Leaders and Sports Specialist to create a dynamic and engaging environment that fosters both learning and athletic development.
Reports to: DIRECTOR OF YOUTH SERVICES, PRINCE JOSHUA AVITTO COMMUNITY CENTER
Location: 876 Schenck Avenue, Brooklyn NY 11207
Hours: Up to 15 hours/week; Non-Exempt
Schedule: September - June, Monday - Friday, 3pm to 6pm
Salary: $21 - $22 / hr
Major Duties:
- Lead and facilitate educational, recreational, and developmentally appropriate activities for youth
- Assist the Sports Specialist with running drills, organizing practice sessions, and managing equipment.
- Coordinate logistics and assist with organizing basketball tournaments and other sports events.
- Ensure the integration of sports activities into the overall program while maintaining the group leader’s responsibilities.
- Collaborate with group leaders to ensure the successful implementation of all activities.
- Support the Sports Specialist in preparing and executing sports-related lessons and practices.
- Maintain effective classroom and sports field management, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment.
- Participate in training and staff development related to both youth development and sports coaching.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Qualifications:
- Minimum High School Diploma / GED. Two years of college and prior experience working with youth, preferably in a sports setting, strongly preferred.
- Experience in playing, coaching, or managing sports, particularly basketball.
- Ability to lead and participate in group sports and recreational activities.
- Knowledge of sports drills, game strategies, and tournament management is an asset.
- Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based and youth development perspective.
- Must be willing to complete DOE & DOH clearances.
