As a co-op, you will be part of the team from day one and given training and tasks that are important and impactful to our future projects' success. McKenney's has a long history of success in hiring Co-ops and supporting their growth into well rounded leaders. Much of our Executive Leadership team, Operations Managers, and senior leaders started in the Co-op program.
The responsibilities and job skills learned are primarily dependent upon the individual Co-op's drive, determination, and ability to learn and function on a multi-disciplinary project team. A typical day can range from building energy models to predict energy usage, analyzing building automation system data for operational issues, to helping run retrocommissioning projects on large commercial properties.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Co-Ops will learn varying HVAC systems types, how they work, and how to optimize the operations for best efficiency.
- Co-Ops will work with field technicians in coordinating building optimization/retrocommissioning projects
- Co-Ops will coordinate with external vendors and subcontractors to solicit material and equipment quotes for various jobs.
- Co-Ops will regularly review construction documents.
- Co-Ops will work with the energy team to review project drawings and specifications to develop estimates and proposals.
- Co-Ops will use software tools to analyze building automation system data, build hourly energy models of commercial buildings, leveraging their system knowledge to improve building performance.
- Co-Ops will attend job site walks to capture building information, review operations for performance improvement opportunities.
Candidates must be able to complete a minimum of 2 full-time, alternating co-op rotations in Atlanta prior to their graduation. Students must be enrolled in a co-op program at an accredited engineering school majoring in an engineering degree (Mechanical or Industrial Engineering is typical).

- Ability to effectively communicate across a diverse group of people (PMs, drafting, field staff, fabrication shops, etc.).
