Job Summary
The University of Utah seeks an experienced accountant to join its Campus Budget Office. The Campus Budget Office works closely with external stakeholders, senior University administrators, peers in the Utah System of Higher Education ( USHE ), and internal budget and finance officers across campus and UHealth. The Accountant position will help the office fulfill its reporting requirements on state appropriations and other financial data, ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, and maintain accurate financial records. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, experience in financial reporting, compliance, budgeting, financial planning, and analysis in the context of state-funded institutions, and the ability to inform and support strategic financial decisions in a complex and dynamic environment.
This is a hybrid position, with at least three days in the office during traditional office hours (8 am—5 pm) and two days remote. The first three to four weeks may be in the office.

Responsibilities
Assisting with Tuition and State Appropriations Reporting
The Campus Budget Accountant will:
+ Coordinate with other Campus Budget staff to prepare reports in accordance with state regulations and deadlines;
+ Collaborate with units across campus to gather necessary financial data for reporting purposes;
+ monitor and stay informed on changes in state regulation to ensure compliance with requirements;
+ Attend affinity group meetings, such as budget officer meetings internally and externally, establishing a network of peers across the system and
+ Work with external entities as needed, such as the USHE , state Division of Finance, auditors, and Legislative staff offices.
Implementation
The Campus Budget Accountant will:
+ Liaise with units on campus to help them prepare budgets, answer questions, and provide technical assistance;
+ Work closely with other Campus Budget staff to monitor units across campus, assisting them in tracking revenues and expenditures to ensure compliance with budgetary constraints;
+ Attend meetings and assist with the preparation of concise and actionable financial and budgetary data and insights for use by University senior leadership and
+ provide ongoing budgetary oversight throughout the year, including monitoring variance reports, fund balances, and key projections and trends.
Compliance
The Campus Budget Accountant will:
+ Reconcile state appropriations accounts and resolve any discrepancies;
+ Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records and documentation;
+ Provide support during audits and respond to audit inquiries as needed; and
+ Perform other accounting duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus two years professional accounting experience. Also required are a thorough knowledge of established accounting principles and practices, knowledge of accounting software, advanced spreadsheet skills, the ability to write queries and macros and demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relations and effective communication skills.
Certifications as a Certified Public Accountant may be preferred for certain positions.
Preferences
+ Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
+ Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience, focusing on audit and compilations.
+ Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
+ Analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data.
+ Communication and presentation skills, with the ability to distill and convey financial information to non-financial stakeholders in a concise manner.
