Responsibilities:
- Design and develop automotive closures plastic trim parts and assemblies, including Side Door Exterior Rocker Trims, Side Door functional plastic parts (glass run channels, close out panels), Hood Trims, Lift gate trims, and Spoiler Systems. Manage polymer-related aspects from initial concept to production.
- Ensure system and component-level design excellence with a focus on performance, size, weight, durability, and cost.
- Collaborate closely with internal teams and external suppliers to efficiently integrate multiple systems.
- Work with various stakeholders and attribute owners across the company, including Vehicle Safety, Vehicle Dynamics, NVH, Durability, Manufacturing, and Design Studio, to create world-class designs.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as CAE by interpreting and using analysis results to guide and evolve designs.
- Ensure efficient process sequences and build quality by collaborating with manufacturing teams.
- Work with Manufacturing, Design, Product Development, Purchasing, Supplier Quality, Stamping, and Suppliers on tool buy-offs and secondary component changes.
- Create and conduct/coordinate testing plans to validate design concepts and ensure performance targets are met.
- Perform detailed analysis of section properties, materials, and manufacturing processes through benchmarking to understand the competitiveness of designs.
- Coordinate virtual engineering and physical validation testing activities for designs.
- Communicate and coordinate with interfacing suppliers.
- Provide direction to others and negotiate balanced solutions.
- Determine required tolerances using GD&T.
- Domestic and international travel as required.
- 5+ years of experience in automotive plastic part design, including managing thermal expansion impacts on part matching, gap and flushness, and paint matching at OEM or supplier levels.
- Solid track record of successful system-level integration.
- Experience working with Class A surface data.
- Proficient 3D CAD skills, preferably with CATIA V5/V6 or similar software.
- Hands-on experience in prototype and production assembly, with a willingness to assemble your own parts.
- Experience in technology, system, and supplier selection.
- Ability to prioritize and execute tasks effectively in a high-pressure environment.
- Detail-oriented with a problem-solving attitude using an Engineering first principles approach.
- Design release engineering experience, including engineering change management and project management.
- Strong understanding of analysis tools such as ANSYS, OptiStruct, MatLab, ADAMS, etc.
- Proven excellence in previous roles, with demonstrated creativity in resolving mechanical design problems.
- Experience in full life cycle development from concept to prototype to full production.
- Ability to understand material requirements from part specifications and select materials after holistic evaluation of plastic grades.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes applicable for Closures Plastic parts, such as injection molding, stampings, joining, etc.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent from an ABET-accredited institution, or equivalent closures automotive experience
