About the Job
Sr. Engineering Manager, Cloud Capacity & Vendor Management
Splunk Cloud Operations Team
The Cloud Operations organization Delivers, Operates and Optimizes the Splunk SaaS Platform. The teams are fast-paced, high-velocity, and use state-of-the-art technology. The focus is always on customer experience, solving sophisticated challenges that span across multiple groups within Splunk, ensuring smooth and expedient services to Splunk users.
We have a substantial AWS, GCP, and Kubernetes presence of large-scale traditional & containerized systems. This is an incredible opportunity to utilize your existing cloud and team management experience and drive the growth of Splunk Cloud.
What we’re looking for
The Cloud Capacity & Vendor Management team within Cloud Operations is looking for an experienced Senior Engineering Manager (EM) to help lead, build, and coach the team responsible for developing services which manage the operation and foundations of Splunk’s Cloud offering, while also driving complex processes towards automation. This Sr. EM will be a leader with expertise in building a highly collaborative, dynamic, and fun team environment. You will embody eagerness to create and own processes for enhancing team health and find industrious solutions to organizational impediments while working on ensuring that there is infrastructure capacity within our Cloud Service Providers to run all of Splunk Cloud. Additionally, you will be responsible for the technical day-to-day relationships with the vendors that are required to keep the Splunk Cloud lights on, particularly Splunk’s Cloud Service Providers (AWS, GCP, Azure). Your team will build tooling to support the next generation of Splunk’s cloud offering, and standardize processes and tooling across all CSPs, with a focus on growing Azure.
What you provide
+ Foster growth . You will meet with team members on a regular basis, help plan and support career development, foster continuous learning, and recruit top-tier developers.
+ Leadership . You have technical leadership or management experience in software engineering.
+ Partnership . You have experience partnering with multi-functional team members to develop and maintain a well-defined roadmap, while balancing technological excellence. Your stakeholders will range from deeply technical to purely business and commercial; hence, you will have to be able to easily communicate with both.
+ Passion . You are passionate about motivating your team, fostering collaboration, and embodying excitement about projects.
+ Business savviness. You understand the larger business context and the impact that our vendors, particularly our Cloud Service Providers have on the business. You will meet with them regularly and foster the relationship while solving engineering problems together.
+ Infrastructure as Code experience . You have experience in leading, building, and scaling secure large-scale services & systems using tools such as Terraform, Pulumi, and CDK on different cloud providers like AWS and GCP.
+ Drive for resolving tech-debt and working towards automation . You constantly consider, "How can we do this better? How can we resolve this long-running tech debt? How can I automate this manual process?" and inspire teams to embrace this philosophy.
+ Security and performance experience. You are knowledgeable of technical excellence and reliability standards related to security, performance, and disaster recovery.
+ Keeping calm and carrying on . You coach teams on appropriately handling issues and are skilled in identifying performance bottlenecks,
+ Organized and communicative. You enjoy tracking work in progress, facilitating team dev process rituals, and serving as an example of great communication. This is particularly important given that you will be meeting with vendors in person.
+ Open and inclusive . You have a demonstrated ability to foster a culture of inclusivity, diversity, learning, psychological safety, mentorship, respect for differences, and collaboration across all engineering skill levels.
+ Multi-cloud experience . Experience building and scaling secure services on different cloud providers is a plus.
+ Operational excellence . You strive to provide excellent service to your stakeholders, ensuring that team SLAs are being met, monitoring information from our services, ensuring that if an issue arises, teams are alerted before our customers notice.
What we provide
+ Opportunities to develop and grow as a leader . We are always expanding into new areas, working with open source projects and contributing back, and exploring new technologies.
+ A team of exceptionally skilled and dedicated peers and direct reports , all the way from engineering to product management and customer support.
+ Growth and mentorship . We believe in growing engineers through ownership, autonomy, and leadership opportunities. We also believe mentors help both sides of the equation.
+ A stable, collaborative, and supportive work environment. The teams work in an open environment, work together to get things done, and adapt to the changing needs for the team. We keep it real by being open and honest. We are a collaborative team that understands the value in open communication - it’s how we interact with our customers.
+ Balance . People are not expected to work 12-hour days. We want you to have a successful time outside of work too. Our colleagues are trusted to be responsible with their time and commitment, and believe that balance helps cultivate a positive environment.
Requirements: 7+ years of software or systems engineering experience, 4+ years of experience in managing software engineers and/or site reliability engineers, expertise working in a CI/CD environment, and experience in working within cloud platform environments and Cloud Service Providers (at least AWS, ideally others as well).
